Something that likely won’t be brought up often in universe is the fact that Ethan is Draco’s biological father (with Lance being his other biological father). The circumstances behind this are a bit convoluted. Lance’s wife, Sybil, had died shortly after the birth of their daughter, Noelle, and two years later Lance was struggling as a single parent. Ethan was 18 at the time and in what we’ll call an exploratory phase of his life. He wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do, be it science like his father, or raising pokémon like his grandparents, or something else entirely. He came to know Lance through Lyra some years previous and the two managed to become quite good friends despite the six year age gap. Ethan also had to admit some attraction to Lance as well, though of course he’d never acted on it. Over lunch one day, Lance brought up that he was considering having another child, a sibling for Noelle so she could have someone to spend time with when he wasn’t around, but that he wasn’t interested in a relationship just yet and was considering his options. Ethan hesitantly admitted his attraction and suggested the possibility of being the other parent of Lance’s child. To his surprise, Lance accepted. The two understood that this was a strictly no-strings-attached affair but found the arrangement worked out for the both of them. Since the child would be raised by Lance, he was the one to go through with the pregnancy, and Draco was born nine months later. Draco does not find out the identity of his other parent until he is in his teens (though he does know that he and Noelle were half-siblings). Neither parent wanted to make drama by revealing their arrangement, so the identity of Draco’s other parent is kept under wraps. Finding out about Ethan is part of the reason Draco comes to resent Lance so much in his teens. Ethan does end up telling his wife, Whitney, about Draco after they had been dating for a while, as he felt she should know if they were going to have a serious relationship, but their daughter, Carmen, doesn’t know that she has a half-brother. In the end, Lance and Ethan do question whether their decision to keep Draco’s parentage a secret was the right one, but what’s done is done. All things considered, the two remain close friends to this day.
