Fankid Week Day 2: Pokémon Partners

Friends forever! Emery and Dante really are the embodiment of a trainer and their partner pokémon being best friends. They’re two peas in a pod… and seem to share a single braincell most of the time and get into tons of trouble together – it’s never a dull day with these two around!

My original plan for today was to draw all four of the main traveling group with their starters, but in the end I only had time to draw one pic. That just means more time later to draw the rest! In the meantime, I’ll include some Emery & Dante hcs under the cut.

Emery was initially unsure if she’d pick Chimchar or Piplup as her starter. Gavin wanted Turtwig, and both of her parents have Torterra, so she knew she’d want to pick one of the other two starters, she just couldn’t decide which. A cool Infernape one day like her dad? Or a sleek Empoleon like Aunt Dawn? A tough choice for sure. However, all doubts were cast aside when she first met the cheeky Chimchar at Lucas’s lab. He was already getting up to mischief by teasing the Turtwig Gavin had set his sights on, so how could Emery resist choosing a partner who would tease her best friend’s partner, the same way she teased him?

Even though Gavin chided his friend for naming her starter after a pun (”One day he’ll be Dante the Infernape, get it?”), Emery and Dante both agree that his nickname is all kinds of cool and badass. The two got along like peas in a pod from the beginning, which ended up backfiring on them a bit once they realized that training and battling weren’t going to come as easily as befriending each other did. Nevertheless, both of them are the type who never give up, and together they’re sure they can overcome any obstacle in their path.

Dante’s a troublemaker through and through. His behavior at the lab was just a small preview of things to come, as he has a knack for finding and causing trouble wherever he goes – be it by teasing is teammates or those of Emery’s traveling companions, picking fights with wild pokémon by accident, or any other number of antics. These habits carry over into his battling style, as he tends to trick his opponents using feints or bluffs, then hits hard with a high powered move like Fire Blast. He’s versatile and adaptable, able to work with Emery to change tactics even in the heat of battle.

While Emery’s often the one bailing her starter out of trouble, the two are likely to cause it by themselves as well. They both share an adventurous and outgoing spirit, always wanting to see new places and meet new people and pokémon. While they can enable each other’s bad habits, and sometimes seem to lack any common sense once they get an idea, at the end of the day Emery wouldn’t trade her starter – and Dante his trainer – for the world
