Notes:
- Claret was born before his parents became a couple, the result of what was initially meant to be a casual fling. Over time, while coparenting, his mothers fell in love, got married and later went on to have their second child, Michelle, when Claret was 8. While Georgia and Burgundy are happy together and love both children, after Michelle was born Claret began to believe he was unwanted due to being an accident rather than planned like she was. He starts acting out, especially as he grows into his teen years, rebelling against his parents and bullying his sister (and she’s awful to him in return, only knowing the angsty, distant Claret rather than the softer boy he used to be). Once he’s old enough to go on his journey, Claret leaves home and almost entirely cuts contact, ignoring all attempts by his family to reach out and help him.
- After he leaves home, Claret really begins to fall into worse habits, falling in with a bad crowd and doing anything he can to get the attention he craves, just wanting to feel loved in the way he feels his family can’t give him. Eventually, after practically hitting rock bottom, Claret is picked up by Ginger, who helps him get back on his feet (even if not abandon a criminal lifestyle) and begin trying to kick some of his self-destructive habits. Claret initially feels indebted to Ginger, vowing to stay by his side, though over time as they live together, help each other out, and become real friends, deeper feelings bloom. Eventually, with Ginger’s support, Claret begins to reopen his relationships with his mothers and sister, bit by bit.
- While he definitely fits the “bad boy” archetype and has some dubious habits, Claret is always an absolute softy with his pokémon. He doesn’t train a specific type and while some of his team members are what you might expect (like his starter, and some other poison/dark/etc types), he loves all pokémon and will fight physically anyone who disses his Minccino. He eventually follows in Burgundy’s footsteps and becomes a Connoisseur, helping others bond with their pokémon, especially pokémon usually considered more dangerous and hard to train.
