I’m late but 02, 27 and 29 with Draco for the ask meme? 👀

You’re not late at all! I’m still taking these (as this is only my second one) – keep em coming!

02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness?

Draco has many insecurities that he tries to hide, mostly by projecting his less deep-seated insecurities up to the top so people don’t try to look too deeply into any other weaknesses he may have. For example, he puts his temper and short fuse front and center, to distract from his low self-esteem. Of course, this habit is an insecurity itself so if people catch on to it it’d be pretty easy to seriously throw Draco off-balance. He’s doing his best even if his best is not that great.

27. If your character was going to get arrested, what would be the most likely reason for it?

Getting into a fight, probably. Definitely he’s done other things that could get him trouble with authorities, but starting fights in public is a bit of a recurring habit that draws attention unlike some of his other self-destructive/destructive in general tendencies that manifest less obviously (or just not in public spaces where he’s making a scene).

29. What is one of the most courageous things your character has ever done for a loved one?

For Draco, throwing himself into dangerous situations barely warrants a second thought. He is fully willing to put himself in danger for the sake of someone else, especially someone he cares about, and that’s a whole rabbit hole into his self-worth issues you can jump down, but the important thing is that for him, courage in the face of an outside threat is not something that comes difficultly to him.

Rather, the most courageous thing Draco has done, in the metrics of what types of things are most difficult and hard to face for him personally, is when he first allows himself to be vulnerable in front of Cypress, to talk about his deepest worries and insecurities, and admit that he isn’t in control and desperately wants to be. Draco struggled for a long time with letting people grow close to him, so taking the initiative to be open with Cypress was a huge risk to him. He’s deeply fearful of others rejecting him if they find out his “true self”, especially people he considers friends (even people he trusts like Renato, Roy and Ulyssa he’s often reluctant to bring up his own issues with).

Cypress is someone Draco has come to deeply cherish, who isn’t someone he’s known since childhood or a relative and thus is “stuck with him”, so he seriously feared driving him away by opening up to him and losing someone who’d become so important. To Cypress, this was the moment that proved to him just how much Draco thought of their relationship, that he was willing to do something so courageous, and is what convinces him that he needs to put in the effort to make their relationship serious as well, because what they have is something both want to last. This step also serves as the foundation for Draco opening up more to his family as well and taking initiative in self-improvement and getting help, so overall one of the big important moments of his character arc.

Draco/Cypress 👀

who is more likely to get injured doing small tasks – Draco, while trying to show off. “I can do this with my eyes closed, see? Easy!”

who worries more about the other – Cypress worries about Draco a lot since he knows Draco doesn’t worry enough about himself. Or rather, he knows that Draco will put himself down and beat himself up and not take care of himself, so he wants to be the person who can help him focus on his own wellbeing. Years of being the eldest brother showing.

who is more afraid about the other leaving them – Draco. He’s afraid of pretty much all his loved ones leaving him and Cypress is no exception. It’s the reason he tries to keep their relationship purely physical at first, not wanting to admit he’s catching feelings since he knows it will make any future rejection all the more painful.

who is more likely to leave (for any reason) – Both of them. Draco because he’s afraid of commitment and isn’t sure he can handle a relationship, Cypress because he struggles to picture himself settling down, not when there’s still so much of the world to see and when he’s still trying to find his parents. Better not to get too attached to spare himself those bonds fraying with time and distance.

who is more likely to drunkenly confess – DRACO

who is more likely to push the other away (for any reason) – Draco. He constantly pushes Cypress’s attempts to be more emotionally intimate away for fear of growing too attached.

who picks fights more often – Both of them. They’re both hotheaded and easily get into arguments. They bicker almost constantly, but most of the time it’s just banter and is how they flirt.

who usually apologizes first – Cypress. Draco will apologize for smaller things, but getting him to apologize for bigger incidents is like pulling teeth.

who is more likely to withhold their feelings for the other – BOTH OF THEM. Denial denial denial is where their relationship is at for a long time.

who is more likely to lash out at the other – Draco. Cypress tends to bicker more and is overall grumpier, but Draco has the worse temper.

who gets more jealous – Draco. He has a nasty possessive streak that he does his best to ignore, but it’s there. He doesn’t like to talk about it, but seeing other people making Cypress happy makes him feel like a failure. He should be the one making him happy, Cypress should have eyes only for him, since he’s so important to Draco.

who is more likely to support the other in a relationship with someone else “as long as they’re happy” – Cypress. It’d be very bittersweet for him. Draco was someone he could imagine having a future with, sometimes, but above all he was someone he wanted to be happy, so he’ll support him and try not to think about what-ifs. Maybe one day someone else will come along, but Cypress can’t imagine that happening anytime soon. Draco really is someone he’ll never forget meeting.

Fankid Musings – Cypress

Ah Cy. The eldest Benga/Iris fankid. He’s been an interesting one over the years in terms of development. Initially he was a version of the fankid who is currently Laurel (though without a twin to keep him grounded). Then I became inspired by @pkmn-thenextgeneration‘s character Harper who was raised by wild dragons and implemented my own take on the idea with him. Over time, I built up his story, thinking about how he came to be abandoned or left behind in the first place that he had to be raised by pokémon, and from these musings I came up with the idea of his parents being a forbidden human/supernatural being couple who eloped and lived a happy life travelling the world with their baby son, until tragedy struck. This idea stuck with me though. I wanted to develop these characters more and I had just struck them completely from the story with my current state of things. Cypress had no relationship or memories with them, so even trying to bring one or both back later on would prove rather challenging, simply because Cy had no desire to meet them and never longed to know them, simply happy with the families he already had.

So we come to the present. I have now grown attached enough to two OCs I made to be dead parents that I changed Cy’s entire backstory to give them more room to shine. (I also wanted to try and explore a different background for him, rather than simply have a very similar scenario to something another great blog has already come up with.) Thus, the current (very cliche but I know what I like) story is that Cypress is the result of a love affair between Khuzaimah, a young man dissatisfied with his life and wanting more, and Nasir, an old, arcane being who’s lived so long he’s forgotten most of his past, even his own name. They met by chance, but their romance blossomed quickly, Khuzaimah eventually convincing his lover to elope with him. They go to Almia first, which is where they soon have their only child, Cypress, named after the trees under which they first confessed their love (and used as a meeting spot many times afterwards). Khuzaimah had cast off his clan name after eloping, so the couple picked out a new surname, Vallas, since they loved to dance together. After Cypress’s birth and once he was old enough to travel, the couple decided to move on, wanting to see the world. Cypress grew up never staying put in one place for long, so he developed an open and playful personality, knowing that he had to make friends fast since he’d be moving on soon enough. Despite this, he loved his little family and their lifestyle, always being able to see new places and meet new people.

When they are staying in Opelucid, Unova however, around when Cypress is 10-11 years old, things go terribly wrong. One day, when Cypress comes home from playing, his parents are gone. They had said that they would be back from shopping when he came home, but they still hadn’t returned even after Cy waited hours for them. Scared and unsure of what to do, Cypress recalls his parents telling him to go to the local pokémon center if anything ever happened, as it made for an easy meeting point. When he arrives and tells the Nurse Joy there his story, she lets him stay the night there. In the morning, he’s escorted home by a Jenny, but their temporary house is still abandoned. At this point, a missing persons case is sent out, and the authorities now have to find a place for Cypress to stay until his parents can be found, the Center not being the best place for a child to stay for what could be days on end. Enter Benga. He had met Khuzaimah a few times in the past, the two being friendly, so he offered to take Cypress in for the time being. Iris is a bit stressed at the idea of having another child to look after when they’ve already got Acacia and baby twins on top of her work as Champion, but she would never turn out a child in need of shelter, who is missing his parents and needs love and comfort. So, Cypress stays with the Pendragon-Redwood family for days… then weeks…. then months… then finally a year has passed and there is still no trace of his parents. At this point, with Cy’s permission, Iris and Benga decide to take full custody of him as his foster parents and, as the years go by with no updates, they eventually adopt him when he’s around 15 years old.

There’s a lot more to Cy’s story, how he investigates his parents’ disappearance as an adult and finds out just how much they were hiding from him… his involvement in the main plot… and much more, but this post is long enough as it is! I’m very excited about all the new developments this story has been going through behind the scenes and wanted to share a little bit.

How did Cypress found out that Draco has his child?

[This content is out of date and no longer canon]

This is a part of their story that I’m still developing, so I’m sorry that I can’t give a more detailed answer, but Cypress likely found out ‘through the grapevine’ so to speak. Most of the Champions of the regions keep in touch, so Iris and Lance know each other and trade news about their families as well as what is going on in their respective regions. Iris is aware of her son’s poor relationship with Draco, so she tries to avoid talking about him when Cypress is around, but accidents happen. It’s likely that Cypress overheard that Draco has a son and though he initially would react with disinterest (why would I care what he’s getting up to?) his curiosity would get the better of him and he would want to try and find information on his ex’s child.

Cypress finds a picture of Noel either through social media or a mutual acquaintance and can’t deny the similarities he shares with the child, not to mention that doing the math puts Noel’s conception right around when he and Draco were still in a relationship. While I know Cypress definitely reacts poorly to the revelation, the details are still not entirely worked out, so I can’t say what exactly he does. I do know that he and Draco are able to come to a resolution eventually, where they agree to give Noel the option of contacting Cypress when he’s old enough to understand the situation. Whether or not Noel decides to do this is still unknown, however, since his character right now pretty much amounts to ‘Draco’s drama baby’, haha!
