14 for Tanith, 19 for Janus, and any of 24/25/26 for Hymnia

14. What is something that never fails to make them excited?
The final, decisive moment, in a Gym or Contest battle! Tanith is competitive at heart, and nothing gets her blood pumping than having victory in sight. When things are down to the wire, there’s nothing in front of her but her pokémon and her opponent and their pokémon, she’s laser-focused, and she loves it. Whether she wins or loses (well, tbh mostly if she wins), nothing beats the thrill of knowing that everything comes down to this move, who knows what counter her opponent will have, how things will go… all she can do is rely on her instincts and her bond with her pokémon. Basically the thing that the music does in BW/SwSh/etc where it gets all intense on a Gym Leader’s last pokémon but it’s her brain.

19.  How do they feel about public displays of affection?
He’s pretty neutral on it! His parents are all pretty PDA heavy, so it’s something he just got used to. It never really embarrassed him even when he got older, though when he was younger he always wanted his parents to hug him as well if he saw them being affectionate in public, haha. When traveling with Glenn and Myka he likes to comment on any PDA he sees from others since he knows it (romance) annoys the both of them. In general he playfully flirts a lot, sometimes getting clingy all “Awww look how cute that couple is… we should hold hands too ~!”. He tones it down a bit after Myka snaps at him about it though, not realizing that romance was such a sore spot for him.

24.  What do they think they’re good at, but aren’t?
Being normal. Or more accurately, Hymnia thinks she’s a very good actor and can easily convince others that she’s perfectly innocent and mild mannered but she really isn’t. It’s hard for her to hide her general suspicious vibes and people are often put on edge a bit when talking to her despite her best efforts. While Hymnia is a good actor in some ways, like being a good liar, blending in with the crowd or trying to be a “Plain Jane” forgettable ordinary citizen is definitely not her strong suit.

25.  What is something they think they’re bad at, but are actually pretty competent at?
Being a big sister! Hymnia loves her brothers, but even she has to admit she’s not the best role model and not the best at being “sisterly” and affectionate. Despite usually being good at reading people, Hymnia isn’t actually aware of just how much her brothers admire her – Vesper especially. Even knowing about her less savory side, they’re happy she takes time to spend with them, even after leaving home. She’s taught them some (questionable) life skills, gives good advice, and would bail them out of trouble without question. She’d be pleasantly surprised to find out how much they care.

26.  What is something they’re legitimately bad at?
Self-restraint. Ultimately, Hymnia is ruled by her whims, even to her own detriment. She has a lot of trouble stopping herself from trying out every idea that comes to her mind, which usually involves sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong, some kind of criminal activity, or a dangerous experiment “just to see if she can”. While she’s certainly very smart and is great at seeing through other people’s plans, figuring out patterns and personalities, and solving mysteries… when it comes to her own actions she’s more of the “look before you leap” type, with said quick wits being the only thing saving her more often than not. She admits it’s a flaw, but she can’t help but enjoy the danger. It does make her life rather difficult though when she makes someone angry at her or gets on someone’s bad side just because her brain said “what if you insulted them/stole from them/poked them just to see what would happen”.

Also cooking. She can follow a recipe, sure, but somehow her food always ends up tasting a bit… off. And while she can follow a recipe… she often doesn’t since wants to see what will happen (see above). And that never ends well. She enjoys a good meal but just can’t seem to make them herself! Not for lack of disastrous trying though.

Send me a number and a character to learn more about them!

Can you tell us a little more about Valerian?

This is super overdue since he’s technically a main character but here’s some bits and pieces!

  • Valerian’s parents are two of the gijinka/turned-human Legendaries – specifically Darkrai (Yuri) and Cresselia (Theia).
  • In their lives before being deified, Theia was a noblewoman in roughly 18th century poké!Russia and Yuri was a thief who she fell in love with, despite their different lives. After turning back to their human forms in modern Sinnoh, one of the first things they do is find each other and reunite, wanting to make their relationship official after not fully getting to before. Theia becomes pregnant pretty quickly.
  • Either right after Valerian is born, or shortly before, Yuri is captured by Team Oracle, who are targeting former Legendaries. After losing her husband/partner, Theia decides to go into hiding to protect herself and their child.
  • Valerian is raised in some cabin/house in the woods in a remote part of Sinnoh, with the only adult around being his 18th century noblewoman mother. As a result he ends up a bit… different. He’s very old fashioned in his mannerisms and is pretty sheltered.
  • He’s not completely sheltered though since his little family had a connection to the outside world through Tobias, who had been friends with Darkrai and continued to be friends with Yuri after the Legendary reverted forms. He would often visit Theia and Valerian’s house and bring supplies, toys and games for Val, news for Theia, etc. He even brought Raphael to visit a few times, so he’s maybe the closest thing Val has to a younger sibling, as he didn’t get to interact with other children much apart from the times he’d go with his mother to the nearest (very small) town to buy groceries and the like.
  • Once he’s older (around 14 or 15, so a bit older than the norm for newbie trainers), Val sets out on a journey despite his mother’s protests, wanting to find out what happened to his father rather than just live in hiding. As a result, he’s very active in investigating Team Oracle. At the same time, he also decides to challenge the Sinnoh League since it was something he always dreamed of doing from his childhood. His starter is a Starly he befriended that had been living in the woods near his home.
  • At some point, while raiding a Team Oracle base, Val finds an injured Type: Null who he rescues. Most of the information and data regarding the chimera had been taken with the fleeing researchers or destroyed, so Val had no idea what the pokémon even was. Nonetheless he nicknames the Type: Null Berkut (golden eagle) and does his best to take care of them. Berkut eventually evolves into a Silvally under Val’s care and the two are very close, though Val still has no idea what kind of pokémon they are until he meets Gladion in Alola. Finally having answers is a breakthrough for both of them (and Berkut is happy to meet another of their kind!).
  • He’s Emery’s love interest! Though due to him being kind of dense, nothing really happens until close to the climax. She calls him Valera as a nickname which he finds adorable but is too embarrassed to admit it.

Some stuff about Hunter (Chase/Mondo son) since I’ve been thinking about him recently:

  • Some background – Chase & Mondo both stick with Team Rocket through it’s evolution under Silver’s control into more of a vigilante group who sometimes works with the G-Men. Dark G-Men if you will. Comic book type stuff haha. Chase eventually becomes one of the Team’s higher ups in the Kanto Branch and is also the Saffron City Gym Leader, so he does a lot of work trying to help stop crime in the largest city in Kanto.
  • Hunter’s mother, Rose, ends up passing away, orphaning her toddler son. Due to circumstances around Rose’s death, Chase and Mondo end up investigating the situation, which is when they find Hunter.
  • Since the toddler had no other family, Chase and Mondo end up taking in Hunter, eventually adopting him. He grows up as part of the big team family and is close with Dove and Celeste (the latter of whom he has a bit of a crush on.)
  • Hunter is on the shyer side and is a bit of a tech wiz, preferring to work on his gadgets then talk to others, though Dove usually is able to get him to socialize a bit. His starter is a Koffing who will sometimes use her smoke to help Hunter run away from awkward encounters (or any kind of conversation he wants to avoid.)

SEND ME A  🖊 AND A CHARACTER AND I’LL WRITE OUT SOME HEADCANONS FOR THEM!

I’m not sure if you’ve received an ask like this before but can you tell us some things about Sirius and Regulus?

Thanks for the ask!
I’m always happy to answer questions about little-talked about fankids!

Unfortunately, Sirius and Regulus aren’t super developed yet in terms of goals, relationships, etc. I can definitely share my ideas and inspiration for them though!

These two are identical twins and the little brothers of Hymnia. They’re actually her half-brothers, born about six months after Grimsley and Shauntal’s wedding (a wedding that may have been moved up a month or two to accommodate Shauntal discovering the pregnancy). In terms of looks, they inherit Shauntal’s dark purple hair and Grimsley’s light blue eyes. Their hair texture is closer to Shauntal’s as well and doesn’t spike up the way their father’s and sister’s does.

Sirius is the older twin and is quite outgoing and headstrong. He inherits Grimsley’s skills for being sneaky and getting into trouble and is very stubborn. He’s the type of person who’s good at manipulating others, but he’s not especially mean-spirited or anything. Compared to Hymnia, he’s an angel (well, most people are to be honest). Regulus is the younger twin and is on the sickly side, in somewhat a similar boat to Wally. Similarly to Wally, he gets better as he gets older, but he was stuck inside a lot as a child. As a result, he’s a bit more subdued than his brother, but no less devious. He figured out early on that being the “sickly child” meant adults would dote on him. Regulus gets along pretty well with Hymnia, while she and Sirius tend to argue and fight. She’s very protective of them, however, and they’re some of the only people she truly cares about.

In-universe, I like to imagine that Shauntal decided to reread the pokémon world equivalent of the Harry Potter series and was inspired to name them Sirius and Regulus as a result. The names sounded dignified and regal enough to suit Grimsley’s tastes, so they stuck!

Out of universe, my reasoning for the names was as a reference to the characters these twins are (fairly loosely) inspired by. The reasoning involves some spoilers for the Black Butler series (albeit ones a year or something like that old), so I’ll put it under a cut!

I’m not sure when this started, but somehow I got it into my head that Grimsley reminded me a bit of Vincent Phantomhive, so I thought it would be amusing if Grimsley had a son that resembled Ciel. This is the entire basis of the twins – I’m not joking. The fact that they’re twins is the spoiler, though I’m not sure it really counts as one anymore. Better safe than sorry and this answer was getting long already!

The name Sirius came from the fact that Ciel’s brother (the real Ciel) went by that alias in the manga. Then choosing Regulus for his brother was actually inspired by Harry Potter, as it was the name that first came to mind as a “paired name” with Sirius for me.

As such, you can picture the twins as looking like Ciel with a different color palette. Unlike their inspirations, however, they don’t really get any angst and live happy lives! That said… I do have an AU featuring Regulus and Hymnia as the primary characters that’s closer to Black Butler canon. This post would really get too long if I talk about it in detail though, so I’ll save it for another time!
