Thoughts on Cardea’s job and exactly how weird Mt. Coronet probably is from the fankid chat!
This ask has been sitting here a while and their families have gone through some pretty big changes since then, but I think I’m now in a comfortable place with the Alola protags to answer this!
Selene & Elio spent most of their childhoods living a very unstable and transitory lifestyle with their single father, Orion. He lost most of his memories when the twins were toddlers, but due to a distrust of authority he never sought help for this, simply doing his best to raise his children on his own and provide for them. When Elio & Selene were around 7 or 8, they moved to Vermillion, Kanto where Orion befriended a woman named Clarissa, who often babysat the twins while Orion worked his various odd-jobs, and even eventually offered them a place to live with her. Only a few years after getting settled, however, Orion up and left with very minimal warning to his roommate and children, leaving Clarissa to take custody of Selene & Elio as they had no other relatives. With this backdrop, when one of Clarissa’s cousins announced they were selling their house in Alola, she took the opportunity to move there for the sake of a fresh start for the children. When they set out on their island trials, Selene & Elio are still coming to terms with the disappearance of their father as well as moving regions, a plotline I thought would work well in tandem with Gladion & Lillie’s stories! (Also they find out that Actually they and their father are Fallers and that’s the true cause of his amnesia, they were just too little to have noticed any lost memories. How things resolve on that end is still WiP!)
Selene and Elio trade off the Champion seat every year or so for a while, but by the next-gen era the title has gone to Acerola! She and Selene are married, and Selene now works full time as a photographer, both artistically and for documenting the variety of pokemon and other creatures that inhabit Alola (her specialty is spirit photography!) Elio is married to current Aether President Gladion, and is an Pokémon Ranger who works closely with the organization, helping to protect habitats and bringing in injured wild pokémon for care. More details on their families under the cut!
Selene has always had a fascination with the macabre and ghost stories, lending her otherwise cheerful and somewhat airheaded demeanor a sinister tinge (aka she will happily discuss the ghost standing right next to you with her usual smile). When she first got her Rotom Dex and discovered it had a camera, she became obsessed with documenting her Trial through photographs, and Acerola’s trial ignited a love of photographing ghosts and ghost-types. She loves the idea of being able to capture the intangible on film, both for artistic merit and scientific research. After the events of the game, Selene remains in Alola and is the one who works with Interpol to catch UBs, which is how she and Acerola grew closer and eventually form a romantic relationship! After their first child, Lirio, is born is when Selene decides to retire as a trainer to pursue her photography full time and when Acerola became the Champion (where she remains). The two go on to have a second child, Eugenia, a few years later. Lirio is a very serious boy who can sometimes be a bit of a stick in the mud, though he’s also a fiercely competitive trainer. Eugenia on the other hand is a very cheerful and somewhat ditzy girl who is known for losing track of time and wandering off (Lirio worries about her as much as he complains about her).
Elio did his best to keep his spirits up throughout his childhood, but in many ways felt that he had to do so in order for Selene to not grow despondent when times were tough as well. This carried over when they moved to Alola, Elio keeping a happy expression even when venting his frustrations or being a bit mean (or manipulative). This exacerbated his rivalry with Gladion, who resented him for being “fake”. Over the course of the game, however, the two realize they have more in common than it initially appeared, forming a close bond of friendship and rivalry. After the end of the game, the two of them decide to travel together to other regions and challenge more leagues, eventually forming a romantic relationship along the way. This is also when Elio learns about Pokémon Rangers! When they return to Alola, Elio and Selene compete for the Champion seat together for a while, trading it off every so often, but once they both decide Acerola is the better fit, he revisits the idea of being a Ranger, something he prefers to working directly for Aether as he doesn’t like dealing with people, so it’s something he can do on his own terms! He and Gladion have two children – Primrose, who is a timid coordinator, and Enzian, an energetic and adventurous boy fond of playing pranks.
Well, by the time Cyrus and Aeon are recovered from the Distortion World, it’s been almost 6 years since the events on Spear Pillar. All the admins have moved on (or begun to move on) from their Galactic days and gone their separate ways. Jupiter and Mars got harsher sentences due to being at Spear Pillar, so mostly have dropped out of the public eye, while Saturn moved up to Snowpoint and became the Gym Leader there (as mentioned in this post). Prior to becoming the Gym Leader, when he was still new to the city (well, it was his hometown, but he hadn’t lived there in years), Saturn ran into Archer, who had also come there because it was so remote. The two ended up talking and discovered how much they had in common, which led to them becoming roommates, which led to a romantic relationship starting. A few years later, they’re married with a daughter, Ceres, and are generally happy with where their lives are – until the reappearance of Cyrus shakes everything up.
When they first are brought back from the Distortion World, Cyrus and Aeon move in with Cyrus’s sister, Johanna, in Twinleaf and live there for a while as they acclimate to being back in the normal world (especially since Aeon had never lived anywhere but the Distortion World). All of this was intentionally kept under wraps since Dawn knew any kind of attention was the last thing Cyrus and Aeon needed, so Saturn wouldn’t have found out via the news or anything. So the reunion between them only happens at Cyrus’s own pace, which takes a while. Eventually, and with some encouragement, Cyrus decides that he really should reach out to Saturn and tell him about Aeon, since his former right-hand deserves that much at least.
This is Cyrus though, so he basically just… shows up at Saturn & Archer’s home in Snowpoint with little Aeon in tow, so needless to say it’s A Lot for Saturn to process. He’d accepted that Cyrus was gone for good and moved on with his life and now all of it had come crashing back without warning, so it takes him a while to work through his reactions and feelings about it. With Aeon, however, it’s easier than dealing with Cyrus. Saturn is already a father, he knows how to handle that, so he does his best to bond with Aeon and invites him over quite frequently. He wants to be part of Aeon’s life, especially since he does worry a bit about how he’ll turn out if Cyrus is the only major adult influence in his life (which leads him to bond with Johanna unexpectedly since she’s also very involved in her nephew’s upbringing for the same reason). Since Cyrus usually comes with Aeon on his visits, the two eventually have to confront everything and end up having a lot more heartfelt conversations than they’d ever had, being more honest with each other about things. Saturn can see that these past years have changed Cyrus, and Cyrus has a lot to ruminate on seeing this side of Saturn where he’s not just devoted to him and Galactic. (And Archer just keeps taking Aeon and Ceres on day trips since the tension at home between his husband and his husband’s sort-of-ex is so thick.)
But over time, now that there’s no Galactic backdrop and both of them have had time away from that and each other, Saturn and Cyrus are able to develop a better and healthier relationship. While Archer doesn’t have any kind of past with Cyrus, he knows how much Saturn still feels for him (he was/is the same with Giovanni after all), so he supports the reconciliation and makes the effort to bond with Cyrus as well. Eventually, Cyrus doesn’t really want to keep living with his sister anymore and spends enough time up in Snowpoint anyways that he (and Aeon) just move in with Archer and Saturn. So yeah, basically Saturn meeting Aeon and Aeon existing at all is what leads to him and Cyrus reconciling ultimately since if there hadn’t been a kid he might not have been able to bring himself to confront Cyrus or at least it would have been a lot slower and probably wouldn’t have ended in the throuple ending.
(This headcanon post centers around Corvin and his unconventional first friend. It’s on the longer side, so is under a read more – enjoy!)
Morty and Falkner’s youngest son, Corvin, has always had trouble connecting to others. Even as a child, he was distant and withdrawn, preferring to spend time by himself than play with other children. The only way he ever did anything outside his comfort zone was when his twin sister, Branwen, dragged him into it. Outgoing, energetic and charismatic, Branwen is Corvin’s opposite and always had plenty of friends in school. She’d bring her brother along with her when she went out with them, but he always felt uncomfortable with so many extroverted people and they often didn’t like him tagging along, finding him weird. All the same, Corvin developed a habit of following Branwen around everywhere, taking her lead and letting her make all the decisions. It was the same when they were old enough to go on their journey, Branwen setting out to become a coordinator, while Corvin simply tagged along with no real goal.
While traveling, Corvin still struggled to open up to others. Branwen made new friends everywhere they went and began to grow more and more popular as a coordinator, while Corvin felt he was fading more and more into the shadows. He often felt that his pokémon were his only true friends, since even Branwen seemed to be forging her own path apart from him now. He wanted to find a goal, something he was passionate about, but he never felt like he fit in anywhere, no matter what he tried.
When the twins are traveling in Sinnoh, one night Corvin is woken up with the feeling of something being wrong. He and his sister both inherited the ability to sense and interact with spirits from Morty, though perhaps due to his lack of human friends Corvin’s senses have always been stronger than Branwen’s. He could tell that there was a lost spirit somewhere nearby, so he left Branwen asleep at their campsite and set out to find it. He eventually finds the spirit wandering around a ways off the route, lost and confused and not having any sense of consciousness from before their death. Corvin spends the rest of the night by the spirit’s side, talking to them and trying to help them remember who they were and why they had remained behind as a ghost. Branwen finds the two of them in the early morning, still talking. She’s in shock to find out how long they’d been there, since this was probably the longest her brother had ever spent time with someone else besides her, spirit or otherwise. She offers the spirit the chance to travel together with them and try figure out their identity along the way.
Over time, Corvin and the spirit bond more and more, especially as the spirit beings to remember more and more about himself. He remembers what he looked like and is able to take that form, leading Corvin to find out his new friend is a boy around his age, which he’s secretly excited about since he’s always dreamed of having a friend his age who wasn’t Branwen. However, despite traveling together for over a year, the spirit can’t seem to remember things like his name, his family, where he was from, or how he passed away, frustrating him since he knows he stayed behind for a reason but can’t remember what his goal was. Branwen suggests the name “Gus” (as in “ghost”) for him as a temporary name until he remembers his own, which initially he and Corvin veto for sounding lame, but it somehow sticks.
Gus remains traveling as the secret third party member to Branwen and Corvin for years, even when they’re later joined by Celeste (who’s fear of ghosts leads to him sometimes playing pranks on her). He and Corvin grow very close, developing an almost brother-like bond, helped along by the fact not many people can see him. Gus even begins trying to alter his appearance so he can “age” alongside his friends as the years go by (and he grows more powerful as a spirit), leading to the twins sometimes forgetting he even is a ghost (at least until he moves something and spooks Celeste). They begin to struggle to imagine life without each other, but it was never meant to last. Eventually, while the circumstances are still under development, Gus is able to remember his past and his purpose and the time for him to leave the group to fulfill his last wish comes. It’s heartbreaking for everyone, but Corvin understands this was the entire reason Gus began traveling with them in the first place, and Gus in turn is thankful to all three of his traveling companions for helping him remember his identity and final wish and giving him so many happy memories in his (after)life.
After parting ways with Gus, Corvin realizes he’s discovered his dream. He wants to be able to help other lost spirits find their way. It’s something he’d already started doing here and there, but now he knows that it’s what he wants to do with his life. If he’s able to help others and bring peace to those who can’t move on, then he doesn’t mind having to say goodbye eventually. From that day, he begins training more with Morty to be a medium and guide for spirits, honing his powers. Thanks to his friendship with the outgoing Gus, he also begins to be better at interacting with humans as well – his friend may now be gone, but Corvin will always remember him as a best friend who helped him find his way in life.
CurtainShipping – Reggie/Maylene HCs
SnowpointShipping – Candice/Zoey HCs
Finally while it was mentioned a bit in each set of hcs, these two families are very close! Candice and Maylene are close friends so their families end up the same, despite the distance between Veilstone and Snowpoint. Owen, Holly and Ivy are fairly close in age and often played together (or Ivy would get bossy with Owen and Holly would try to be peacemaker), while Lynette really admires Ivy as a trainer and sees her as a mentor.
Roy has a huge one-sided rivalry with the Cinnabar Gym Leader, Shouju, that nobody really seems to fully understand but him. The backstory to it all starts before Roy was even born. His great-grandfather, Blaine, was the Cinnabar Gym Leader for a long time, and eventually became the mentor of Roy’s father, Green, in the years between the events of the Kanto games and the Johto games. When Cinnabar Volcano erupted, Blaine was offered the vacant position of Viridian Gym Leader, at least until his gym on Cinnabar was repaired or moved. However, Blaine recommended his apprentice, Green, for the position instead and, while he took some time off, Green remains as the Viridian Leader to this day.
After the Cinnabar Gym was rebuilt, Blaine returned to being it’s Leader, but after a few years he felt ready to retire. He offered his position to his grandchildren, Red and Leaf, and his by-now son-in-law, Green, but all of them either didn’t want to leave their current jobs or had no interest in being a Gym Leader. So, Blaine ended up looking through a wide variety of candidates for his position, but none of them felt quite right to him. In fact, he ended up finding the perfect successor by accident. While traveling in Johto, Blaine met Soumei and Shouju, the newly-returned-to-human Lugia and Ho-oh, by chance. The couple was still struggling to adjust, used to living in ancient times, but Blaine could tell there was a special spark about them – especially Shouju, who trained fire-types and seemed to have strong leader skills. He swooped in with an offer to come with him to Cinnabar, by now fully rebuilt, and see if taking over the gym would be a fulfilling new life for them.
As it turned out, Blaine’s instincts were spot on. Shouju took to being a Gym Leader like a fish to water (or perhaps more fittingly a phoenix to flame)… perhaps a bit too enthusiastically, but nobody could deny he was a strong trainer and provided a challenge for trainers on their League Challenge while also being able to manage the leadership that came with being a Gym Leader, looking after Cinnabar and its people. Shouju remains the Cinnabar Gym Leader through the fankid era, living on the island with Soumei and their son, Kanade. Now this is all fine and good, but Roy thinks it’s all wrong! Growing up, he learned about this whole story, and decided that what really happened was Shouju “stole the Gym from Red and/or Green”. No matter how many time his dads tell him they had no interest in becoming the Cinnabar Gym Leader and they both have no issue with Shouju being there, Roy is stubborn in his belief. (It doesn’t help that Green and Shouju have quite a rivalry going, both being arrogant and competitive, but it’s still a friendly rivalry between Gym Leaders and nothing deeper!)
Roy has made it his life’s goal to become the new Cinnabar Gym Leader and “oust the usurper”, but when he first went on his Kanto journey he was utterly wiped out by Shouju the first time he challenged him. To rub salt in the wound, Shouju isn’t exactly known for being comforting, so he simply told Roy all the ways he needed to improve before trying again. This only further strengthened Roy’s resolve and convinced him Shouju was basically the equivalent of the Demon Lord in his video games. Since that day, if someone brings up the Cinnabar Gym within Roy’s earshot he’s sure to go on a rant about his nemesis and goals of “freeing the gym from tyrannical rule”, so his traveling companions learn quick not to bring it up around him.
(As an aside, while I’m still developing what Kanade does/if he travels, you can bet Roy sees him as a rival as well – the son of the enemy!)
Some follow up twitter thoughts on my last post.
Omegaverse nonsense ramblings but Bede both craves and fears bonding with Victor pretty early on into their relationship. He plays it cool and is pretty tsun with Victor overall, but deep down, he’s very affected by how kind and attentive his sort-of boyfriend is. Bede craves affection, this doesn’t change even after he starts to work through some of his insecurities while living with Opal, so every bit of affection Victor shows him makes him melt, especially affection in the heat of the moment.
I was going to just do this for Galar characters like the ask said, but then I realized I don’t have a list of all the related canon characters anywhere so I think I’ll include that as well, under a cut.
Galar
Kabu is Flannery’s uncle, which is something inspired by cute fanart of them together. Flannery’s father, Hoku, is Kabu’s identical twin brother and the two have a good relationship. Hoku’s very much a prankster though so whenever he visits his brother in Galar he has a habit of pretending to be him and doing weird/silly things, much to Kabu’s chagrin. Flannery couldn’t tell them apart until she was like 7.
Piers and Marnie are related to the Montfort family of Unova (which includes Grimsley and both sets of Unova protags). Their grandfather, Orpheus, was the twin brother of Calliope, Grimsley’s mother and the grandmother of the BW/BW2 protags. Meredith, Piers and Marnie’s mother, was the result of a fling Orpheus had, however, so this relationship doesn’t get discovered until after SwSh’s plot I don’t think. So this means that Piers and Marnie are the second cousins of Hilda, Hilbert, Nate, and Rosa, and the first cousins once removed of Grimsley, Diana (Hilda and Hilbert’s mom), and Harper (Nate & Rosa’s dad).
And now for a much briefer breakdown of the other relationships in this verse (in no particular order)!
