While I didn’t get an ask for this, this question jumped out at me since I had found a video that made me think of the answer to it for Janus a while ago and it felt like a sign!
🚆 TRAIN – what is their answer to the trolley problem?
39. When people look at your character, is there some assumption they might make about them just by appearance? Is that assumption correct?
Janus almost always has a smile on his face, so people often assume he’s a very upbeat, optimistic person – and this is true! However, Janus also uses his smile to hide his true emotions, so sometimes his outward appearance does not match what he’s feeling inside. There are also times where Janus will change his expression on purpose to mess with people, such as frowning suddenly to trick people into thinking he’s angry with them, then switching back to his normal grin and saying “Just kidding!” Some people also find his expressions irritating, thinking that he’s smug or doesn’t take anything seriously, though in that case they’ve fallen for the persona Janus presents on purpose.
Janus also almost always wears a uniform – either the Subway Boss uniform or the Ginkgo Guild uniform depending on the arc – so people tend to assume he takes great pride in his work, which is correct! Janus considers both the Battle Subway employees and the Ginkgo Guild members to be his family, so by wearing their uniforms, he feels connected to them!
42. Is there anything in your character’s past that they regret, haunts them, or they wish they could change?
Before the Hisui Arc, the moment in Janus’s past that most impacts him is when Ingo went missing. Only about a month before Janus was planning to start his journey as a trainer to gain the experience he needed to one day become a Subway Boss himself, his Uncle Ingo went to Lostlorn Forest to train and never came home. Janus put his journey on hold to assist the search and rescue teams, but it was to no avail. Janus was meant to go with Ingo to train that day, but ended up canceling the plans to go to the Nimbasa amusement park with his friend Amelia to ride a new roller coaster instead. Because of this, Janus blames himself for Ingo going missing, feeling that it wouldn’t have happened if he’d been a more responsible trainer and gone with him. He knows deep down that he’s not at fault, but it doesn’t change his feelings. Even after deciding to start his journey after all a few months later, Janus still dedicates most of his energy to trying to solve his uncle’s disappearance, investigating any and all rumors that he thinks might be related.
This search leads him to end up being thrown through space and time via mysterious ruins in Sinnoh, arriving in Hisui and losing most of his memories in the process. After this point, his greatest regret is his lack of memory. He knows that he’s forgotten something important, and frequently worries over the people he knows he left behind, even if he can’t remember them.
43. Does your character have a switch that changes aspects of their personality whether they are around friends, family, etc. Is there someone who gets to see their true self?
Janus hides his feelings behind his cheery expression and mannerisms, though most of the time, his smile is genuine. While he’s truly friendly and outgoing, he doesn’t show his most honest feelings and self to anyone but those he considers close friends and family. Prior to the Hisui Arc, these people were quite numerous, and anyone who spent time with him for long enough would be able to pick up on his various moods without too much difficulty, even though he expresses himself differently than most people.
However, after he ends up in Hisui and loses his memories, Janus becomes much more guarded. This is partially due to his amnesia, but also because people in Hisui tend to be wary of him – seeing him as an outsider and finding him strange and even threatening due to being a Faller. Janus doesn’t want to get hurt or shunned even more, so only opens up around a very select few people and even then, the only person who he shows his most true self to is Volo.

I saw a cool train at the science museum while on vacation and apparently that was inspiration enough for me to give Janus a little brother😅
So! Meet Zephyr! He’s about 10 years younger than his brother, and is also 10 when Janus goes missing on his search for Ingo. While he’s the opposite of Janus in many ways, people still claim that despite the large age gap the two brothers have “twin energy”. As a child, Zephyr often followed Janus around everywhere, copying him and finishing his sentences for him (albeit with his trademark stoicism). After his uncle and brother are gone and he grows into his teen years in their shadow, however, Zephyr begins to focus more on surpassing them, aiming to set new records both in the Battle Subway and for Unova railways in general, spearheading a project to bring long-distance inter-regional rail up to his exacting standards.

First is a redraw of his original/default/Unovan design, how he looks from the beginning of his journey up through the Hisui Arc. He’s depicted at around 16/17 for this art.
Second is an entirely new art depicting his Hisuian Form! This is how he looks after being taken in by the Gingko Guild when he becomes a Faller in Hisui in search of his uncle later on in the story. He’s around 20/21 for this art.
07. Is there a catchphrase or sound that they tend to make a lot (likely without being aware of it)?
In terms of catchphrases, Janus tends to use a lot of train terminology in his speech the same way his dads do. This was something he simply picked up due to growing up in and around the Battle Subway and while he’ll sometimes play up the puns for fun, a lot of it is subconscious. Otherwise, when he doesn’t really know what to say (or doesn’t want to respond) he usually just goes “Ah” with a big :> smile. Janus’s “Ah” can mean anything from “That’s nice but I don’t really care” to “Oops, haha I just messed up this will be fun” to “Do you realize what you just said honey you’ve got a big storm coming.”
15. Is there a certain person in this world that they cannot stand? The very mention of this person’s name makes them tremble with anger or fear.
Janus simply isn’t really the type to hate someone that much, a trait he gets more from Ingo than Emmet or Cordy (who can both hold a mean grudge). He certainly has people he doesn’t like, but he’d simply rather not waste the energy getting angry about them. There are much better things he can be doing with his time. That’s not to say he’s above retaliation if someone hurts him or those he cares about though. He takes threats deadly serious and will step up to defend himself/others if he feels the need, but he just won’t go out of his way to track someone down for revenge or get upset about them after the fact. Once he deals with a situation/person, he’s done with them, even if it’s just pretending they don’t exist. He has a pretty high tolerance for annoying people though as long as they’re ultimately harmless – in fact he loves those types of people since they’re fun to mess with!
42. Is there anything in your character’s past that they regret, haunts them, or they wish they could change?
Well…. this really hinges on when in his story we’re talking about. During the earlier days of his journey – not really! Janus is the type who’d rather move on quick than linger with regrets. And at that point, he’s had a pretty straightforwardly happy childhood. Nothing that upsetting has happened to him. Later on, he begins to accumulate some regrets, however. He wishes he was there more for Bertie, then maybe… If only he had spent more time at home, then maybe his dad… He doesn’t like to dwell on these thoughts, preferring to take action, especially since that has worked in the past to resolve things (Bertie came home safe and they’re still on good terms!), so he keeps that attitude when looking for Ingo.
Of course… none of that really ends up mattering when he loses his memory on his way to Falling into Hisui. Amnesiac Janus is still Janus though, so he doesn’t really let his missing memories bother him. Sure, there are half-remembered things he’d sure love to recall – like why he came here in the first place, but the way he sees it, trying to force things isn’t going to make the memories return sooner and moping over them isn’t productive, so he’s just doing his best to live his life in this strange new place. Finding out who he is and what (who) he’s forgotten is a goal, but it’s not the only thing he’s focusing on. Once everything is said and done, Janus doesn’t regret coming to Hisui one bit. He made new friends and a new found family, found his dad, and helped save the world – how could he regret that?
