1, 8, 10, and 12 for the Kris/Winona and/or Wallace/Steven kids?

I’ll do the Wallace/Steven kids first since they’re more developed, but I’ll do the Kris/Winona kids as well in a separate post later!

01. What does your character’s name mean? Did you pick it for the symbolism, or did you just like the way it sounded?

Maia: This name comes from Greco-Roman mythology and is the name of two different figures. There is Maia of the Pleiades, the mother of the god Hermes, and Maia the Roman goddess of spring and growth. In-universe, Maia was named in honor of both May and Zinnia – the month of May deriving its name from the Roman Maia, and since it’s also the name of a star, in the tradition of the Draconids. (Additionally, the real-life Draconids meteor shower occurs in October, Maia and Jasper’s birth month! Though it happens earlier in the month, not at the end like their birthday is.)

Jasper: Jasper also has two different sources of meaning. It can be a version of the name Gaspar or Casper, which means “treasurer” and is often considered one of the names of the Three Wise Men/Magi from Biblical lore. It is also the name of a semi-precious gemstone, though the origin of the name is different (the stone’s name means simply “speckled stone”). At least one of Steven’s children needed a stone name, and Jasper is the lucky recipient! And fittingly, blue jasper, like his hair color, happens to be the rarest color for the stone. I like to think Steven had the blue ocean variety in mind when choosing a name for his son. For those who believe in the more spiritual and esoteric properties of gemstones, Jasper can represent and encourage comfort, reassurance, optimism, relieving fear, and living in the moment, said to be like having a good friend close to your side. All of these qualities, as well as the stone being associated with the autumn, I think perfectly exemplify Jasper’s qualities (or qualities that would bring him comfort in his harder moments), so it’s a very fitting stone for him to be named after.

Alphonse: This is a French name derived from Germanic origins, and means “noble and ready” or possibly “battle”. Unlike his older siblings, I mainly chose this name based on vibes alone, haha. As Maia was named by both of her fathers and Jasper was named by Steven, I wanted to think of what kind of name Wallace would pick for the third child, and an elegant, classy name like Alphonse just felt right. The meanings of the name do hint at his more combative and stuck-up nature, though.

08. What is, perhaps, their biggest flaw? Are they aware of this or oblivious to it?

Maia: Her stubbornness. Like the rock-types she specializes in, Maia can be unyielding and set in her ways to the point of obstinance. She’s fully aware of this but also doesn’t particularly care since she usually does whatever she wants anyways. And usually when she’s being particularly stubborn over something trivial, one of her friends or family will be there to smooth things over so she doesn’t have to take responsibility for being petty (since that’s what siblings are for, of course).

Jasper: His denseness when it comes to both his own feelings and others’. He can be remarkably emotionally canny when he wants to be but if that intuition tells him something he doesn’t want to hear he just pretends he doesn’t see it to the point other people are flabbergasted by it. He tries to stay upbeat and ignore his own negative feelings if he doesn’t want to face them, and has a habit of making up his mind about how others feel about them without always looking at the reality of the situation. This can lead to him doing reckless/self-destructive things without realizing the impact it has on the people who care about him, since he often assumes he’s not particularly likable when it comes down to it. He is aware of this flaw and is doing his best to use this awareness to circumvent it with the help of his therapist, but it’s been a long road to get to this point.

Alphonse: His raging inferiority complex. Alphonse can be downright nasty to others to hide his own insecurities, to the point of being a bully to his rivals and even a few cases of sabotaging their progress to further his own. He’s determined to succeed no matter the cost or if he has to tear down others on his way to the top, not realizing that this just ruins the spirit of competition in the first place. He places his family on a pedestal then rages when he can attain the too-lofty heights he’s assigned them to. He puts too much on his plate trying to become a renowned Top Coordinator and win the Pokemon League and look perfect and flawless as he does it and when he can’t reach the impossible goals he’s set for himself it just feeds his complex and makes him angrier and more prone to reckless acts.

10. Is your character more feminine or masculine?

Maia: I would say she’s on the femme end of androgynous. Think short-hair fitted pants-suit businesswoman style in terms of her fashion. She doesn’t really pay much mind to presenting in a particular way though, just wearing and acting in the way she thinks is the most fitting and professional for her purposes.

Jasper: Slightly more masculine, but like Maia he really doesn’t care much and is definitely the one who inherited Wallace’s more flashy and flamboyant fashion sense. He throws together outfits from a wide range of styles, often wears makeup, and generally does his best to achieve some kind of goth pirate martial artist look or whatever it is he’s going for.

Alphonse: Distinguished masculine. Probably the closest to Juan’s fashion sense out of any of his mentors growing up. He dresses to impress and present a certain image, but it’s not necessarily the style he’d use if he was dressing purely for his own preference. That’s something he’d probably have to spend some time figuring out once he gets to a point he’s comfortable enough just being himself and not the unrealistic perfect person he’s trying to be.

12. Is there some particular talent, skill, or attribute that they simply could not give up?

Maia: Her ability to think quickly and strategize! Maia often is overwhelmed by the complexities and seeming lack of logic involved in most interactions and occurrences in daily life, finding comfort in numbers, patterns, and solid constants, just like her beloved rock-types. She sees the world through a lens of endless probabilities and thrives in situations like battles where she can put her talent for numbers and pattern recognition to work via strategy. This way of thinking makes some parts of her life difficult, but she doesn’t care and would never be able to give up the way she sees the world.

Jasper: He’s talented in many ways (many that he doesn’t even realize), and he can certainly name a number of skills and traits he considers fundamental to his being, but the one he has the most complicated relationship with is his affinity for ghost-types and spirits in general. He feels that this talent of his is rooted in hardship and the stigma people with ghost affinities often face is challenging for him to deal with, but at the same time, he also considers it an intrinsic part of who he is, something he can’t give up even if he wanted to. Embracing the world of ghosts and spirits is part of Jasper’s personal journey and under Shouju’s tutelage he’s able to discover a side to it he hadn’t considered before.

Alphonse: His family! While they’re also his greatest burden in his quest to live up to them, Alphonse takes great pride in his heritage, both being the son of two champions, who also have robust and outstanding accomplishments outside of their champion title, and being part of an ancient clan with many traditions and rich history. At the end of the day, he simply wants to make his family proud and live up to their legacies even if he’s not necessarily going about it in the best way. Finding his own place among them rather than trying to surpass them is really the crux of his journey.

Fankid Week Day 4: Traveling Age While the older Hoenn fankids are all in their mid-to-late 20s – and many are even parents themselves – during the era of Emery and co.’s journey and the main plot… they too were once bratty new trainers. Featuring … Continue reading

Now that you mentioned Jasper’s kids and Maia’s kid, who do they end up with? (eg. could be Angelica, Kiran, etc.)

image

Going to answer these two anon asks together since they go hand in hand!

There are a few older Hoenn fankids who are married and/or have children, though for now only Jasper and Maia’s children have names. Here’s the breakdown.

Jasper Stone-Lǚ & Rowan Lǜ (OC) – Jade (son) & Thalia (daughter)

Maia Stone-Lǚ & Kiran Akamine – Larimar (son)

Anthony Kaʻanāʻanā – ward/foster father of a currently unnamed much younger second or third cousin from Sidney’s side of the family

Landon Fáng & Angelica Noha – currently unnamed son, currently unnamed twin daughters

Rowan, for now, is an OC! If in a future generation, or maybe anime location, they create a setting/characters I think work for him, he will be added as a fankid, but for now he and a few others who he knows/interacts with are total OCs. He’s generally pretty reserved and can even be considered uptight, but mostly that’s just how he expresses himself and is actually quite passionate (esp with Jasper haha). He also gets along very well with Maia and the two make quite the formidable siblings-in-law team. Rowan is a member of the Lǜ family, which is a sibling clan of sorts to the Lǚ family Jasper is part of. Centuries ago, they were one clan, but a pair of infighting clan heads split the family up into the two they are now, and eventually the Lǚ moved to Hoenn. Now, in modern times, both families keep the old traditions of their original clan alive and meet every 10 years to exchange news, have martial arts tournaments, celebrate traditions, and generally have a fun time with friendly rivalry. Jasper and Rowan first met when they were both children at one of these gatherings, but the meeting didn’t exactly go well as Jasper dragged Rowan away from adult supervision to show him the best swimming spots, causing both to end up scolded. Rowan, who was a very rules-conscientious child, decided then and there that Jasper was a menace. But, ten years later, when the conference was hosted by Rowan’s family, he ended up helping Jasper when he got stuck in the woods after injuring himself exploring. After that encounter, they developed feelings for each other very quickly, and they started dating not long after (much to the bafflement of many friends and family. Love works in strange ways….) They traveled the world together for a while, but after Jade was born they decide to settle in Sootopolis.

Edit: Tweaked some small things! Jasper prototype design ~ He’s the second child (by a few minutes) of Steven and Wallace (having an older twin sister, Maia, and an 8 years younger brother, Alphonse). He’s generally known as a nuisance around his home of Sootopolis … Continue reading

Do you have any headcanons for Archie/Maxie, Steven/Wallace, and Lysandre/Sycamore?

Oh hell yeah I do. These are three of my fave ships after all. So it is going to get a bit long whoops.

  • I like the hc that the two are exes by the time ORAS happens and it fuels their rivalry. I definitely also like the hc that the team they used to be on together was Team Rocket, but like back in its old days when Gio was this cocky young aspiring criminal mastermind and Delia and Miyamoto were also there… good times. Archie was a grunt and Maxie was a scientist! Lots of fun spicy times back then, until they both left the team to pursue their own ambitions and grew estranged…
  • After ORAS they merge their teams after getting funding/support from the Aether Foundation to establish a Hoenn branch, thus becoming “Team Aether” in a sense. Since Rayquaza represents the sky and aether is the element that exists above the terrestrial sphere (like where Rayquaza lives…) it’s a fitting route for them! Like their parent foundation, Hoenn Aether focuses on conservation and pokémon rehabilitation, essentially the goals of Team Aqua and Magma but without all the extremism. Archie & Maxie are the co-leaders now and while they’re an unconventional duo they make it work and get a lot done.
  • Kiran was a total accident and the two weren’t even fully reconciled/back to their old relationship when Maxie found out he was expecting. Legit she was conceived only a few months post ORAS whoops. Maxie claims he’ll never forgive Archie for it, but they both love their daughter and she was in many ways what fully brought both teams together (in both the reconciliation sense and the romantic sense as I ship the admins together as well haha.)
  • Archie actually picked the name Kiran out (as conciliation for accidentally knocking Maxie up haha), as it can have multiple meanings in different languages. It can be from Sanskrit and means “dust” or “sunbeam”, tying into Archie’s heritage but also the Team Magma theme. As a Japanese name, the kanji used are 磯藍, meaning “seashore” and “indigo”, tying into Maxie’s heritage but also the Team Aqua theme. Archie is very proud of himself for coming up with it.

  • Steven and Wallace have been friends since childhood, having met through Steven’s father Joseph being old friends with Wallace’s grandfather Drake. They set out on their pokémon journey together, with Steven challenging the Hoenn League and Wallace aiming for that year’s Grand Festival. However, after Steven’s other father, Célestin, passes away that year Steven decides to go to Sinnoh rather than remain in Hoenn and be stuck at home with Joseph, who he had a strained relationship with at that point. Wallace of course goes with him, sympathizing with his friend as he’d lost his own parents unexpectedly in a storm some years previously.
  • While in Sinnoh the two end up befriending Cynthia, though she and Steven are initially rather antagonistic rivals. They’ll deny this as adults and claim they’ve always gotten along (Wallace is quick to correct them every time.)
  • The two were dating and had been for quite a long time by ORAS, though they hadn’t tied the knot yet. I do like the idea of them getting engaged during the events of the game, then getting married the summer after, either not long before the Delta Episode happens or right after. Steven would have been happy with a small event but Wallace of course wanted a huge wedding. I’m sure there was plenty of fun drama thanks to all the coordinators who attended (coughHarleycough).
  • When it came to choosing names for their children, Steven wanted rock names of course, while Wallace was more reluctant about those, wanting nice elegant names. In the end, they came up with two rock names and two non-rock names (one of each for both masculine and feminine names). Wallace did quality control the rock names though since he didn’t want Steven choosing any “weird” ones like Bort or something. Since their first children were twins, they used one of each – Maia for the girl (after May) and Jasper for the boy. Wallace ends up using the other name he picked out for their next child, a son named Alphonse. Steven was gunning for another child so he could use Larimar, but since that didn’t happen (Wallace was firm that three was enough) he’s set his sights on their first grandchild getting that name.

  • I hc Lysandre as being a bit younger than Augustine, so they first met in a more mentor/student capacity back in Lysandre’s research days. He admired Augustine’s research and was excited for the chance to work with him. They quickly became friends and that eventually led to romance. However, they became a bit more distant after Lysandre left to start his own company, mainly due to both being busier than ever and no longer working together. They remained a couple, but there was a bit of a rift there that led to Augustine not noticing Lysandre slip further and further into extreme views.
  • Their son was conceived shortly before Lysandre enacted his plan to use the ancient weapon, intended to be a final intimate moment before the world changed forever. Instead of that happening though, of course, Augustine was left finding out he was expecting after the final battle, when Lysandre was presumed dead. He had assumed his symptoms were due to grief and shock at everything that happened, but finding out the true cause was another rollercoaster of emotions. He keeps it a secret for as long as he can, but eventually others noticed and while he never does outright say who the other parent is… it’s pretty obvious to anyone since he had always happily broadcasted his relationship with Lysandre. When their son is born, Augustine chooses to name him Florian as a way to honor his (presumed) late partner.
  • Of course, in this verse, Lysandre wasn’t actually dead but had rather been spending time rethinking his life choices in “so you tried to destroy the world, what now?” bootcamp with AZ. He does eventually decide to come back like five years later and is certainly surprised when he finds out he has a kid. There are a lot of road bumps but things eventually work out and he and Augustine get back together. (There’s more on this in Florian’s profile.)
  • Augustine’s red socks were a gift from Lysandre for his birthday that Lys was very apologetic about since he thought they weren’t enough, so to prove that any gift from Lys was perfect, Augustine has regularly worn them ever since.
  • Alain and Calem are Augustine’s nephews in this verse and while their grandparents became their primary guardians after their mother passed away, Augustine was always more of a father figure to them, as was Lysandre after he and Augustine started dating. So, in some sense they had a bit of practice parenting before Florian came along, though due to everything their relationship with their nephews is complicated.

Fankid Week Day 6: AUs/Crossovers My OriginShipping fankids kind of look like Tales of Symphonia characters so this was an easy choice. From left to right: Maia as Raine, Alphonse as Genis, and Jasper as Zelos.

Oh look I drew these three as well! It’s the Origin kids. Maia (Top Left – Oldest Sibling, Jasper’s twin): Serious and rarely smiles, but more since she’s socially awkward rather than being mean. A member of the Hoenn Elite Four who specializes in Steel types. … Continue reading
