Fankidtober Day 21: Layla Birch-Fáng

Another purple kid today, but opposite vibes! Layla is Wally/Anabel’s daughter, but is raised by Wally/Brendan after Anabel goes missing under mysterious circumstances. This vanishing prompts an interest in cold cases and unsolved mysteries in her, leading Layla to join Interpol as an adult, where she meets an alternate (?) version of her mother. They have an unconventional family relationship, but they do consider each other family! Layla mainly does office work, being the woman-in-the-chair to her partner Noelle (from earlier this month) and pretends to be completely fed up and not at all flustered by all the flirting Noelle does through their earpieces.

12, 33, 42, 44 for Layla!

12. Is there some particular talent, skill, or attribute that they simply could not give up?

Layla prides herself on her cool, rational, logical mind which she considers to be key for her work in Interpol. While investigating UBs and disappearances she has to be able to keep a level head to ensure everything goes smoothly. As a result, she can come across as very stern and stuffy and doesn’t do well when working with people who are more impulsive and outwardly emotional – not that that stopped her superiors from pairing her up with Noelle in the hopes they’d balance each other out.

33. If your character wanted to be alone, where would they go?

Layla prefers to be alone rather than socialize. She’s not particularly awkward with others, but simply doesn’t see the point in fraternizing too much with her peers when she could be getting work done. As a result, she has a lot of places she considers her quiet places, such as her office and her apartment where she lives alone. (Noelle still keeps dragging her out to bars and after work get-togethers though much to her chagrin.)

42. Is there anything in your character’s past that they regret, haunts them, or they wish they could change?

She often wonders what her life would be like if her mother hadn’t gone missing, but whenever she does she can never decide if she’d prefer it that way or not. She feels guilty about these thoughts, comparing them to directly being glad Anabel fell through a wormhole, but had that not happened then her parents probably wouldn’t have gotten together, her little brothers and sister wouldn’t have been born, and she wouldn’t have joined Interpol and met her alternate mother and all the other people she admires at the organization. (And she wouldn’t have met Noelle but she tells herself that’s the one silver lining.)

44. Is there a particular event that would emotionally devastate your character?

Anything going catastrophically wrong on a mission. Being close with so many Fallers means that Layla is painfully aware of the consequences of slipping up while on a case and she would never forgive herself if her mistake led to someone else suffering such a fate, or worse. She tends to place all the burden of responsibility on herself, so even if something wasn’t directly her fault she’d still blame herself, hence why she’s so serious about protocol and safety while on the job.

Fankidtober Day 11: Layla Full Name: Layla Birch-FángFamily: Wally Birch-Fáng & Anabel Endou (Parents), Brendan Birch-Fáng (Stepfather), Rhys, Eve & Henry Birch-Fáng (Younger Half-Siblings), Prof. Sean Birch (Step-Grandfather), Wanda Fáng (Cousin Once Removed), Landon & Lambert Fáng (Second Cousins), Drew Hayden (Cousin Once Removed), Francis … Continue reading

Over the past few months I’ve been sort of overhauling this AU a bit. The story, characters, and parent ships have been changing to reflect how my own preferences have changed over time since I started this blog. In the earliest drafts of L&L, Brendan actually was married to a former Team Aqua grunt, a ship I decided on since I had recently read the Dating a Team Magma Grunt comic series and found it cute. Since Alpha Sapphire is canon in L&L, I had Brendan date a Team Aqua grunt instead. Eve was the fankid for this pairing. Wally and Anabel was honestly a “pair the spares” ship. I wanted Wally to have children and Anabel just seemed like an interesting character to pair him with. This was before SuMo came out and the whole Faller!Anabel plotline and everything.

However, over time, I decided I didn’t want as many canon character/oc ships, and didn’t feel as interested in Brendan’s family anymore, so I merged him and Eve with Wally and Anabel’s family. But really, this choice was mainly since I’d come to ship Wally/Brendan much more in that time. I’d always liked it, but now I wanted them to be endgame. Anabel was still in the ship since I liked Layla, but that was really the only reason. I grew fond of the OT3, but I couldn’t deny that I was mainly shipping it due to Brendan/Wally.

Which brings me to now. With SuMo introducing Faller!Anabel as a concept, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of the Anabel from L&L Falling to another world. The roadblock was that she had a family already, but really, Layla is the only one of her children that has any serious attachment to her in terms of personality, role, etc. Eve and Henry just aren’t quite developed enough yet. So I began to think about a scenario where Wally and Anabel are dating, Layla is born, but then Anabel falls, leaving behind her boyfriend and daughter. Brendan helps Wally after this and over time feelings bloom, leading them to get married and have Rhys, Eve, and Henry. Layla grows up wanting to find out what happened to her mother, which is what leads to her joining Interpol and meeting Faller!Anabel. The two end up with a close bond, Anabel coming to see Layla as her own daughter.

I know I have a follower who really loves this OT3, and I’m so happy that you do, but I just don’t have the same passion for the ship, sadly. This has been a long time coming, since I’ve found writing OT3s is quite hard for me. I have to ship all the characters equally and I just don’t in this case. All the same, maybe once Anabel falls, she meets a Brendan and Wally in another world and has a happy end with them – it’s what she deserves!

Any more headcanons you have for the Birch-Fang family?

[This content is out of date and no longer canon]

Sure thing!

First off, I’ve talked about Layla and Rhys quite a bit… but not the younger two, so I’ll post a bit on what I have so far.

Eve: (Brendan/Anabel) She initially started a pokémon journey as a coordinator, but realized partway through that it wasn’t for her, returning home to pursue her true passion of botany. She’s currently working at a botanical garden, learning about plants and how to care for them. Like Layla, she inherited psychic powers from Anabel, though she has a rarer and more powerful ability, being able to control plants. She’s happy to just use this power for her work, however, being very gentle and not wanting to fight or something with it.
Henry: (Wally/Anabel) The baby of the family. He’s still at home towards the beginning of the story, but eventually starts his journey as a coordinator during the plot. Unlike the rest of his family, a rather grumpy and prone to melodrama. I don’t know too much about him yet besides this though.

As for the parents, I shared a bit about how they got together on Brendan’s profile. The family live in Petalburg, where Wally’s the Gym Leader (neither May nor Max wanted the position, so Norman offered it to a very surprised Wally when he decided to retire.) Brendan moved a lot of the lab equipment from Littleroot to Petalburg once he settled down there, though he travels to his hometown frequently. Anabel is still a Frontier Brain and has become the leader of the Hoenn Battle Frontier (and still has short hair.)

They’re naturally all very busy so sometimes making time for each other and the kids is difficult, but they all do their best, setting aside time each Saturday they can all spend together as part of a family tradition. The parents like to rotate who chooses the family activity for the weekend, so they end up doing a wide variety of things together. Brendan likes outdoor activities like hiking or bike trips, Anabel likes museums and theater shows, while Wally likes visiting new places and hands on activities like crafts workshops.

Brendan’s the most cuddly out of the entire family and loved it when the kids dog-piled him when they were younger. He’s more restrained about asking directly for physical affection from his spouses, but they both know when he wants some cuddles. After the kids are asleep they often like to all curl up on the couch with wine and a movie (they all love cheesy romcoms.) Wally still has health scares occasionally, though he’s doing better than when he was younger, so whenever he’s feeling poorly Anabel and Brendan love to spoil him rotten (even if he complains about being coddled, he does love how much they care.) Anabel can sometimes get stressed from work, and when that happens Brendan will always give her one of his “patented” shoulder massages. Anabel is also the one who cannot function in the mornings without coffee – Layla inherited this trait, but she’s a tea rather than coffee drinker.

This ended up getting long, but I will likely have Wally and Anabel’s profiles out soon with more hcs! Hopefully this can tide you over, anon!

Hoenn Changes

Recently, I’ve been slowly working through all my different families and fankids, especially those who have been around since the beginning, and seeing if there are any I want to change. My latest changes have all been in Hoenn and they’re fairly major! I’ll lay them out here so none of the changes I make on the blog regarding these updates will be too surprising.

  1. I love Solomon dearly, but I felt like he just didn’t properly fit in with May and Lisia’s family and that it was holding him back as a character since I struggled to come up with hcs for how he interacts with them. As a result, he’s been “moved” to Brawly/Roxanne’s family, replacing Rudy.
  2. Additionally, Safir’s name has also been changed and she is now known as Angelica. She’s still rivals with Layla and a mentor to Eria. Solomon’s story is pretty much exactly the same despite this change, so his dynamics with Tanith and Balthazar are the same!
  3. Since I can’t really picture Levi as an only child, he now has a new younger sibling since Solomon has been “moved”. This new brother has been tentatively named Evan and I’m still developing him!
  4. Drew’s children are now quite a bit different. He still has twins and is (basically) a single dad, but rather than identical boys, he now has a girl and boy named Lydia and Francis. Their other parent is Harley, but he and Drew are not in a committed relationship and have no desire to move in together or get married or anything. Harley does play a role in Lydia and Francis’s lives though and sees them regularly. Being Harley’s biological children heavily factors into the twins’ unfriendly rivalry with Brooke (Harley’s ward).

Part 2! Part 2!!!
Flash-game mania. Finishing up the ‘make a fankid for each hair color available’ challenge.

Fankids are…

  • Ulyssa Sakeva (Wes/Rui’s daughter)
  • Celeste Campanula (Silver/Lyra’s daughter)
  • Layla Birch-Fang (Anabel/Wally’s daughter but raised by Brendan/Wally)
  • Vivian Choji (Brycen/Sabrina’s daughter)

10 Facts About Layla Birch-Fang

  1. She has a very strong sense of responsibility. As the eldest of her siblings, she sees herself as the protector of her younger brothers and sister and tends to want to keep an eye on them, whether they want it or not. She also feels responsible for preventing any bad thing she sees happen due to her precognition abilities, even though she can’t always change things. Part of her character arc is learning to both let her siblings have some breathing room and to understand that just because she knows something is going to happen, it doesn’t mean it’s her fault if she just can’t do anything to prevent it. She’s not omnipotent.
  2. She’s very neat and well organized and grows anxious when things are disordered in her space. She has a habit of cleaning or organizing when she’s stressed out, be it her own home or other people’s.
  3. She has a very professional dress sense, fitting right into the Interpol dress code before she even was recruited. She typically wears blazers and skirts and always carefully coordinates her outfits (out of the various dark colors allowed by the Interpol dress code.)
  4. After years of practice, she was able to hone her precognition abilities to the point she can choose what kind of vision she’s going to have. This is most useful for her work in the Ultra Beast department of Interpol as she’s able to accurately predict when and where wormholes will open up, allowing her team to be able to minimize damage caused by rampaging and lost UBs.
  5. She works mainly with the Faller version of her mother, who she refers to as her Aunt off-duty. Faller Anabel has come to see Layla as a sort of surrogate daughter herself over time as well. Layla also ends up working a lot with Ohia, who himself is a Faller and a sort of on-call employee for Interpol, assisting their studies of UBs and the nature of wormholes in Alola along with Weiss, who has psychic powers that allow him to manipulate Ultra Wormholes. She strongly dislikes working with the two younger men however, due to their laid back attitude towards the work, since if there’s one thing Layla hates, it’s not taking serious matters like UBs with the gravitas they deserve.
  6. She first met her boyfriend, Caleb, through their mutual friend Opal. At first she hated his flirtatious and habit of joking around, but over time as she got to know the ‘true’ Caleb under the front he puts up she came to like him, eventually falling for the crafty and well-read, but still fun and cheerful man. He often jokes that he’s the only one who can get Layla to laugh (which is not true, but she does find herself more at ease around him, able to relax and not worry as much about her responsibilities.)
  7. She’s also childhood friends with Rudy and Safir, Roxanne and Brawly’s twins. However, she’s not as close with them when she’s older due to an incident when they were children. The three were exploring near Granite Cave when Layla had a vision of them being attacked by scary looking wild pokémon. She immediately ran back down the beach to where Brendan (who was babysitting them) was, but while she was fetching him to help, her friends accidentally disturbed an injured wild Salamence that was hidden in the foliage. Brendan was able to subdue the dragon with the help of his pokémon, but Rudy still ended up getting a fairly serious injury that left a prominent scar. Since that event, Layla has blamed herself for Rudy’s injury and been somewhat distant from her old friends, especially since while Rudy holds no grudge towards her, knowing she was only trying to help, Safir feels a bit bitter that Layla left them to tell an adult rather than just warning them that there was danger so they could have avoided the entire situation.
  8. She used to love watching her father (Wally)’s gym battles as a child, wanting to be like him when she grew up. Originally, she would be brought to watch by Anabel or Brendan, but later on she goes by herself, visiting after school and taking notes on her father’s techniques. As a result, her battle style is strongly influenced by his. Despite working for Interpol currently, she still dreams of one day inheriting the Petalburg Gym from Wally.
  9. Prior to joining Interpol, she didn’t know that she would be working with a Faller version of her mother, but Faller Anabel ended up being assigned as Layla’s mentor (definitely done on purpose by the upper management.) Layla ends up introducing her ‘aunt’ to her mother which ends up being a very weird meeting for everyone involved.
  10. Layla drinks a lot of tea, of all kinds. She drinks herbal tea to relax, green tea to help her focus, and black tea when she needs an energy boost. Her parents gifted her a fancy box to keep her collection in which is now proudly displayed on her desk at work. She’s very protective of her tea as well, not wanting to share it with anyone and going on a crusade to find the culprit if she finds any missing.

Ten facts about Caleb!!

10 Facts About Caleb Moore

  1. He has his mother Flannery’s red hair, though his is more on the ginger side, having some orange tints to it rather than being just red. He doesn’t know what his other parent looked like (they being just someone his mom hooked up with), nor does he particularly care, but he assumes his lighter hair and green eyes come from them, as Flannery has red eyes.
  2. He loves wearing both scarves and bandannas despite the Hoenn heat. While tying a cloth around his forehead isn’t that weird since he helps out at the hot springs and it can function as a sweatband, the scarves he has no excuse for other than liking how they look. While he sometimes will go without a bandanna, the scarf is constant enough his friends grow concerned when he isn’t wearing it.
  3. He was a somewhat lonely child, there not being many other children his age in Lavaridge. While he was friendly with most of the other residents he didn’t have many close friends. As a result, a lot of his personality is a bit of a facade, as he acts cheerful and open just since that’s what got people to like him (and the older people there on vacation would give him sweets for being ‘such a nice young man’). In reality he’s on the more reserved side, with a sharp wit and fondness for snide comments. After going on his journey and meeting more people, he opens up more and ends up making his first friends.
  4. He likes to give people nicknames, whether they want them or not. Some of these for his closer friends include ‘Opes’ for Opal, ‘Scully’ for Layla, ‘Aurory’ for Aurora, ‘Alietta’ for Alba, ‘Eyebrows’ for Harry, the ‘Terrible Trio’ for the Pendragon triplets, and ‘Red Bean’ for Neal (due to his hair color). He’s also one of the very few people Yuusuke tolerates calling him by his given name, Lyndon. Caleb abuses this privileged readily, often calling him ‘Lyndie’.
  5. Opal is his closest friend, the two meeting on their respective journeys. The rest of his friend circle met through happenstance and random encounters and each of have a different story to tell for how they all became friends. Caleb claims it was his ‘magnetic personality’ that drew such different people from all different regions together.
  6. He’s very physically affectionate and rather flirtatious, often slinging his arm over people’s shoulders and greeting them with a hug. He does keep in mind if someone’s uncomfortable with that however – he never wants to take his teasing too far and end up hurting someone. Once he starts dating Layla, however, he does tone down the ‘flirting with everyone’ quite a bit and mainly just flirts with his girlfriend (though he’ll still jokingly flirt with his other friends.)
  7. Though he might act the part of an airheaded, chatty fool half the time, Caleb is quite smart and has a voracious appetite for knowledge – in no small part thanks to books being his main source of entertainment as a child. He also enjoys coming up with strategies and one of his favorite parts of being a Gym Leader is figuring out how to adapt to his opponents and keep them on their toes.
  8. He hates spicy food, which his friends regularly point out the irony of considering he’s a fire type Gym Leader. He argues that his favorite food is grilled meat, so that’s befitting enough of a fire type specialist that everyone can over look his hatred of spicy things.
  9. He sleeps. A lot. Both a full night’s rest plus naps during the day. He claims it’s from growing up in such a lazy and laid back town that makes him so sleepy. He tends to drink a lot of coffee to clear any lingering drowsiness, which usually just makes him more eager and chipper than usual (Opal often complains about ‘Coffee Caleb’ since nobody should be that happy that early in the morning.)
  10. He claims to have a photographic memory. Nobody’s been able to confirm or deny this, but the general agreement is that, photographic or not, Caleb does have a very good memory. Generally what he finds worth remembering are random trivia and things he can use for blackmail against his friends (he remembers when Yuusuke wouldn’t lend him his umbrella and he had to walk home in the rain… Yuu might not remember but Caleb does…)
