What if the all the male player characters were the canon protagonists? Would the families change?

Before I go into any differences, I first want to make note that in most of the games where the protag you don’t play is does not appear, or only appears minimally (BW, BW2, SuMo, SwSh), I have both protags as “canon”, each sharing story elements. For example, in Galar, both Victor and Gloria compete in the League Tournament, and Victor becomes Champion and goes through the Crown Tundra DLC, but Gloria is the one who has the more significant rivalry with Hop and goes through the Isle of Armor DLC. For those games, I consider both protags canon, so my ships wouldn’t change. I also consider Red and Chase to be the “canon” protags of their respective games in this AU, so their families would also remain the same.

That leaves us with: Ethan, Brendan, Lucas and Calem.

I think the only one of them who’d have a different family is Ethan, who would be endgame with Silver this time, while Lyra would likely end up with just Whitney (as the way I hc her personality she’s less likely to have the same kind of admiration of/relationship with Lance that Ethan does). I’m not sure how their kids would differ, but I am (very slowly in the background, not likely to see light of day anytime soon) working on an alt-L&L verse with different ships where Ethan/Silver are endgame, so I might have some ideas eventually!

Brendan, Lucas and Calem would all end up with the same partners (Wally, Barry and Serena), their initial dynamics would just be a bit different. I don’t think their families would be too different in the end though, though perhaps some of their kids might have different interests – Gavin might be a trainer instead of a researcher if protag!Lucas is the Champion rather than a Professor, for example.

Made a couple name changes that might or might not stick around, we’ll see.

Rhion –> Rian: Just making the spelling on this one a bit more standard. Still from the name meaning “little king” and the Rhionaeschna genus of dragonflies. If Aaron can come from “arachnid” then Rian can come from Rhionaeschna.

Trias –> Tristan “Tris”: Another case of me feeling weird about names that aren’t “real”. Tris is close enough to Trias that the meaning still works, and I feel like these two names are more in line with Tate & Liza. Also Tris is the emo twin so he gets the sad name.

Lucine –> Églantine: Since I cut Camille ages ago Cynthia/Diantha have been missing a French-named kid which is sad so I had to change that. Églantine is just cute and kinda nerdy so it suits her.

And then here’s the big one since it’s a more major kid, but I realized Echter is not a proper plant name, like I had wanted for all the Alola kids, so he’s now been renamed Erik after the Erica genus of plants (heath and heather).

Do you have any major inspirations (storytelling, art, characters, etc.) when it comes to your verse?

I definitely do! I’ve loved the fantasy genre for a long time, so that’s what inspired me to make a fantasy AU for the Pokémon world, with magic, mythical creatures, and lots of myth/lore-oriented worldbuilding. My original inspiration for this was way back when I was in elementary school and I watched Lucario and the Mystery of Mew for the first time – this movie introduced me to the idea of combining pokémon and fantasy in a way I’d never thought of before, so it’s still a very special movie for me (and my fave pokémon movie in general).

A lot of the ways magic works, how people interact with the supernatural, and the like are all inspired by the fantasy media I’ve consumed over the years, but there’s not one source that’s the main inspiration. However, the concept of dragonbloods, apart from deriving just from my love of dragons, was inspired by a few different pokémon fanfics I’ve read where humans have types like pokémon do – Triumverate and its spinoffs by Renaerys in particular.

The story beats from L&L have some inspiration from other media as well. The main plot has some Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Tales of Symphonia inspiration (among others), for example, and a number of more minor fankids are direct expies of fictional characters (just because I felt like it haha). Other minor plotlines might just be inspired by things I like since I wanted to explore how that story would work in the verse I’ve created – like how the Alola kids have a Stranger Things-esque story. This is one of the big reasons I have so many fankids – I just want to be able to play around with many different kinds of stories.

In terms of other people, I’m friends with a number of others in the Pokémon Fankid community and we’ll often discuss ideas. In particular, @pkmnomegaverse and I talk a lot about story and character ideas and come up with a lot of different things together, so that’s why there’s some overlap in our two AUs! We both draw inspiration from each other constantly since we’re often discussing ideas for fankids, the parents, plot points, etc. The whole community in general is a huge inspiration since discovering it is what gave me the idea to make fankids in the first place, and that led to everything else in the AU.
