As I mentioned in the post I made about the switch, it was mainly just since I really wanted to hammer in the parallels those two have with Red and Leaf! I do like both configurations, but I think having the male protags be in similar roles and the female protags in similar roles just worked a little bit better for me, in terms of meeting that goal. Plus, in terms of looks and design, Chase is really more similar to Red and Elaine to Leaf, from hair color to outfit color, and even hairstyle. So, it just felt more fitting, after I thought about it for a while, to have Chase end up with his rival/childhood friend and Elaine be involved with Team Rocket and end up with someone she connects with through that association (as Leaf and Yellow really bonded while investigating Mewtwo together, something that Leaf had discovered while working with TR’s science department.) Like I said, I do hc Chase and Elaine to be similar enough in personality that the ship dynamics and fankids won’t change too much, plus they weren’t super developed to begin with, so hopefully the switch will help! Changing around parent ships is something I might do when I have creative block after all!

🖋 Roy!
Roy was a little over a year old when his parents went to Alola (where they appear in the Gen 7 games.) It was his first big vacation ever, as any previous trips had been just around Kanto or to Johto at the farthest. While Roy was a pretty easy going baby, travelling on a long trip with him was a new experience for Red and Green. He got pretty bad jet-lag that resulted in a few sleepless nights, but luckily was able to adjust to the different time zone before too long.
Alola was Roy’s first experience being somewhere completely different from his home and he was entranced by all the colorful sights and sounds, seeing new pokémon and getting to spend lots of time at the beach. Red and Green definitely noticed how much Roy loved Alola, and considering they also had a great time there, they decided to try and visit there semi-regularly on family trips (as well as places like Kalos, which is where Red and Green got engaged!) This ended up sparking a love of travel in Roy, prompting him to want to start his journey somewhere other than Kanto. So, after brainstorming with his step-cousin Jay, the two decide to start their journey in Galar, since the League there seems so exciting and different from Kanto’s.
Eventually after two years traveling with Jay in Galar and then Kalos, Roy and his cousin part ways, with Jay heading back to Kanto to focus on his research and Roy heading to Sinnoh to keep practicing his skills as a trainer. It’s in Sinnoh that Roy meets Draco and then Ulyssa and starts traveling with them, and also meets some new rivals in Emery, Gavin, and Renato’s group!
Send me a 🖊 and a character and I’ll write out some headcanons for them!
Fankid Week Day 1: Family February 10th is Roy’s birthday so I wanted to draw him celebrating together with his parents, Red and Green, his little brother Sage, and the family’s pokémon. Happy Birthday Roy!
Do you have any headcanons for Green/Red, Barry/Lucas, and Hugh/Nate?
Absolutely I do!
Green/Red
- Green is the one who managed to get Red to come down from Mt. Silver by somehow beating him in a pokémon battle. Red was so stunned by his loss he just kind of followed Green back to civilization. This is the only time Green has ever beaten Red in a battle to this day.
- Roy was already born when the couple visit Alola in the SuMo games and was about 10 or so months old (give or take.) And yes, they brought Roy with them! Leaf and Yellow (along with baby Amaryllis) also went to Alola and ended up having to babysit Roy a lot because of Green and Red’s frequent trips to the Battle Tree, whoops.
- Red is technically unemployed, as he doesn’t really want to officially apply to be a professional pokémon trainer due to annoying bureaucracy. He still regularly seeks out strong people to battle with though, so his skills never go rusty and also because he thinks “stay at home dad” sounds way more boring than “Multiple Hall-of-Famer Professional Pokémon Trainer.”
- They are a very sappy couple who like to show off how in love they are, though most of that’s Green being smug (”Look at me and my husband!”) while Red just goes along with it.
- Green likes to think he’s a super cool dad who their sons will see as a role model but more often than not they go to Red for advice instead. Whenever this happens Green ends up pouting and needs to be comforted by his husband.
Barry/Lucas
- A couple where people sometimes wonder how they got together due to how different they are. Definitely a very wholesome case of opposites attract.
- Since Lucas was Rowan’s assistant, the two didn’t really meet until they were around 13 and didn’t interact much until after the events of DPPt. They met by chance at the Battle Frontier and when Lucas mentioned he wanted to improve his skills as a trainer Barry took him under his wing as a “Professional Battle Frontier Tour Guide.” Their romance blossomed fairly quickly, though Barry was pretty oblivious to his feelings while Lucas was realizing that subtle flirting wasn’t going to cut it in this case.
- Dawn officiated their wedding and got trained to do so especially for her childhood best friend.
- By the fankid era, Barry is a Frontier Brain like his father before him and Lucas has taken over from his mentor Rowan as Sinnoh’s regional professor, though he still has trouble getting used to being called Professor Hawthorn!
- While they only planned on having one child, mainly due to how much of a handful Gavin was, they end up adopting Balthazar by chance due to some unexpected circumstances. Namely, Barry helps Dawn (who is Sinnoh Champion) take down a Cult of Giratina after they kidnap Dawn’s daughter, Tanith. While there, they find a boy who was raised in the cult to be a sacrifice and now has nowhere to go. The kid got attached to Barry so one thing leads to another and he and Lucas end up with another son (Barry claims that Balthazar being blond and having a long name like him was a Sign that he was meant to be part of their family from the start.)
Nate/Hugh
- Though Nate wasn’t the BW2 protag, he and Hugh were still childhood friends as he and Rosa are twins. They had quite a bit of romantic tension between them throughout middleschool, leading Rosa to urge them to try dating after getting fed up by hearing both her brother and best friend worry about the other’s feelings to her.
- By the time the trio leave on their journey at 15, Nate and Hugh had been dating for about a year and a half.
- Once it became clear that Team Plasma had returned, the two teamed up to fight them whenever they could, Nate mostly being worried about Hugh getting too angry.
- Things reach a new level when, towards the end of their journey and when it’s looking like the final showdown with Plasma is approaching, Nate finds out he’s unexpectedly pregnant. While Nate himself is nervous due to his young age, he’s also excited and all the more motivated to defeat Plasma for the sake of his and Hugh’s child. Hugh, on the other hand, is incredibly nervous that Nate and the baby might get hurt now and ends up being rather overprotective of his boyfriend. This causes a bit of friction, but ultimately they’re able to work things out (with Rosa smoothing things over as usual whenever the two squabble.)
- Glenn is born the summer after Ghetsis is finally defeated and Hugh and Nate stay in Aspertia for his first year or so, getting help from their parents and doing their best to raise him. At that, the two start looking for jobs so they can support their family, agreeing that whoever finds one first will take it, while the other will stay home to take care of Glenn. Hugh ends up getting unexpectedly scouted by Interpol, leading the family to move to Castelia, where they get married soon after.
- Eventually, after Hugh gets promoted when Glenn is about 4, the family move to Opelucid to be closer to the League, which becomes their permanent home. When Glenn is about 6, they end up adopted their second child, Mindy, after her mother, Yancy, was looking for someone to adopt after she became unexpectedly pregnant. Glenn and Mindy are both handfuls but their parents love them (even if they hate each other lol)
Who’s your favorite family from each region?
This is a pretty difficult question since for generally my “favorite” family is the one I’m working the most on at any given time, so the answer would change. I can answer for who I’m enjoying working on the most at this point in time though.
Kanto: I haven’t really worked in depth on any Kanto families recently, but I’d say right now I’m feeling very fond of the NamelessShipping fam. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Roy and Sage’s dynamic in particular, as antagonistic siblings is always fun. I also like how they both have some of Green’s arrogance, since cocky characters are fun to work with.
Johto: Hands down the HonorShipping family just since they have so much drama. A very close second is Whitney, Ethan, and Lance’s family, since there’s a lot of fun dynamics going on there as well. I think the sheer outrageous soap-opera levels of drama in the former family are what make me like it more though, as well as how quirky all the kids are.
Hoenn: Probably a tie between TensionShipping and ContestQueenShipping at the moment. ContestQueen will always be my forever Hoenn OTP, so they’re going to be a favorite no matter what, but I’ve been having so much fun with Drew and Harley’s family (and their dynamics with Lisia and May’s family) that I feel like they deserve a shoutout as well.
Sinnoh: The BrokenShipping family is a forever favorite just since it’s one of my weirdest ships. It was basically an in-universe crackship to start out and then the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be great. They’re an unconventional family but one I love working on. Shout-out/runner up goes to the ComaShipping family though since how could I not love Paul and Ash and their goth babies.
Unova: I know this is kind of cheating since it’s like five families but… the Montfort family. All of them. I don’t know how it got so big but all of them are so much fun to work with and I’ve just put some of my most effort into worldbuilding Unova that they’re kind of my babies. Even if some are trash babies like Grimsley and Hymnia and Mindy. And while this isn’t set in stone yet… there’s a good chance the family’s going to be expanding once I incorporate Galar 😉
Kalos: PerfectWorldShipping. Hands down. I have… trouble with Kalos, mainly due to lack of inspiration, so I think it’s probably no wonder that the couple/family with a convoluted story and angst and drama is the one I like best. Florian’s one of my older fankids as well and while he’s changed a bit over the years he’s still one I’m very fond of. I really like thinking of him and his dads being soft together.
Alola: Another region I find myself having a bit more trouble with, but I’d say maybe SnowLilyShipping? Mainly just since they start out very typical but end up being very unconventional with their half-alien meme son, sort-of a zombie son, and then adorable baby daughter. Another fun one is the NineIronShipping fam (Guzma/Molayne/Kahili) just since it’s full of shenanigans and all three kids are gremlins.
And then I have some other regions, but those only have one-two families each so I’ll exclude them. Honestly I think it’s just become obvious that the families I tend to enjoy working with are the ones with more drama/unconventional elements. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the more typical families – I do immensely! It’s just that when it comes down to picking favorites, I tend to go with the ones like that. Really, this AU is more of a personal/self-indulgent project than anything, which is why things get over the top or dark sometimes. I simply want to explore lots of different ideas I find interesting and use this world as a way to do so.
Family Updates
Changed up two of the Kanto families a bit.
Red and Green are now a couple (NamelessShipping). Sage is still Green’s son, but now he also has an older brother named Roy who is Amaryllis’s age.
Yellow and Leaf are now a couple (CrushedWorldShipping). Amaryllis is still Yellow’s daughter.
Sage and Rylla are still the same as before in personality, goals, etc. I will get around to updating their and their parents’ profiles… eventually.
Wait… Blaine is Red’s grandfather?! That’s interesting…
Blaine is Red and Leaf’s grandfather, you’re right! He has one child, a daughter named Scarlett, who left her home on Cinnabar Island to go on her pokémon journey to challenge the Kanto Gyms in the year 3584. During her journey she runs into Professor Samuel Oak’s son, Charlie, and his best friend, Aiden, who are travelling together. While Charlie was undertaking a junior research program during his journey, Aiden was a competitive trainer like Scarlett, so the two naturally became rivals. Aiden and Scarlett both had ambitions to become the Champion one day and while they competed, they also end up becoming friends, especially after Aiden unexpectedly helps save Scarlett’s life (which is also when her crush on him fully blooms – though it takes a while for Aiden to notice both that and his own feelings for her.)
The two end up dating and later get married. Scarlett moves to Pallet to be with her husband and the two have two children together – Red and Leaf. While both still had aspirations to become Champion, they both found that that goal was harder then they had thought when they were young. Scarlett ends up with health problems following Red’s difficult birth, which result in her needing to stay closer to home. She gets a job as a teacher for aspiring trainers at the local school. Aiden, meanwhile, gets a job as a trainer at the Viridian Gym, however when Red is 8 and Leaf is 6, he goes missing following his discovery of Team Rocket activity there. During these struggles, Blaine does his best to support his daughter and her family, though he can’t often leave Cinnabar due to his job as Gym Leader. He also, of course, ends up facing his grandchildren years later when they both go on their own journeys and is very proud of what strong trainers they’ve become. While Blaine was somewhat distant for them growing up, he is able to establish a better relationship with his grandchildren once they’re teens.
