I’m not sure if you’ve received an ask like this before but can you tell us some things about Sirius and Regulus?

Thanks for the ask!
I’m always happy to answer questions about little-talked about fankids!

Unfortunately, Sirius and Regulus aren’t super developed yet in terms of goals, relationships, etc. I can definitely share my ideas and inspiration for them though!

These two are identical twins and the little brothers of Hymnia. They’re actually her half-brothers, born about six months after Grimsley and Shauntal’s wedding (a wedding that may have been moved up a month or two to accommodate Shauntal discovering the pregnancy). In terms of looks, they inherit Shauntal’s dark purple hair and Grimsley’s light blue eyes. Their hair texture is closer to Shauntal’s as well and doesn’t spike up the way their father’s and sister’s does.

Sirius is the older twin and is quite outgoing and headstrong. He inherits Grimsley’s skills for being sneaky and getting into trouble and is very stubborn. He’s the type of person who’s good at manipulating others, but he’s not especially mean-spirited or anything. Compared to Hymnia, he’s an angel (well, most people are to be honest). Regulus is the younger twin and is on the sickly side, in somewhat a similar boat to Wally. Similarly to Wally, he gets better as he gets older, but he was stuck inside a lot as a child. As a result, he’s a bit more subdued than his brother, but no less devious. He figured out early on that being the “sickly child” meant adults would dote on him. Regulus gets along pretty well with Hymnia, while she and Sirius tend to argue and fight. She’s very protective of them, however, and they’re some of the only people she truly cares about.

In-universe, I like to imagine that Shauntal decided to reread the pokémon world equivalent of the Harry Potter series and was inspired to name them Sirius and Regulus as a result. The names sounded dignified and regal enough to suit Grimsley’s tastes, so they stuck!

Out of universe, my reasoning for the names was as a reference to the characters these twins are (fairly loosely) inspired by. The reasoning involves some spoilers for the Black Butler series (albeit ones a year or something like that old), so I’ll put it under a cut!

I’m not sure when this started, but somehow I got it into my head that Grimsley reminded me a bit of Vincent Phantomhive, so I thought it would be amusing if Grimsley had a son that resembled Ciel. This is the entire basis of the twins – I’m not joking. The fact that they’re twins is the spoiler, though I’m not sure it really counts as one anymore. Better safe than sorry and this answer was getting long already!

The name Sirius came from the fact that Ciel’s brother (the real Ciel) went by that alias in the manga. Then choosing Regulus for his brother was actually inspired by Harry Potter, as it was the name that first came to mind as a “paired name” with Sirius for me.

As such, you can picture the twins as looking like Ciel with a different color palette. Unlike their inspirations, however, they don’t really get any angst and live happy lives! That said… I do have an AU featuring Regulus and Hymnia as the primary characters that’s closer to Black Butler canon. This post would really get too long if I talk about it in detail though, so I’ll save it for another time!

What would happened if Grimsley did gave Hymnia to fulfill the bet?

Nothing good that’s for sure.

However, it would have been nearly impossible for things to get to that point. Grimsley’s sister, Diana, was already very suspicious of her brother’s motives. Despite saying that he was going to be giving his baby up for adoption, he was cagey about the exact details of what agency he was working with and about the situation in general. If he hadn’t come to her first asking for help, Diana would have pressed her brother for information until he spilled. In this case, things would just progress roughly the same way they do in ‘canon’, with Grimsley going to Alola for about a year to help get his life in order while Hymnia is raised by her aunt and mother.

In the very slight chance that Grimsley did manage to give her away he would very likely regret his actions enough to ask for help then. Champion Iris would likely get involved and, as in ‘canon’, the criminal ring would have been apprehended and Hymnia would have been tracked down and rescued. In this scenario, it’s possible that Grimsley might not ever get full custody of her, in which case Hymnia would be raised by Shauntal, or at least her father would have taken more time to help himself than the year he does in ‘canon.’

If somehow all of these scenarios didn’t happen and Hymnia was permanently sold off to fulfill her father’s bet however, then she likely would have suffered a terrible fate. Many people want to use mages for nefarious ends and, as a baby essentially sold on the black market, she could have ended up dead, raised to a be tool and used for her powers, or any other number of grim fates. In all likelihood however, this wouldn’t have happened. There are too many factors that prevented Grimsley from giving her up, from his own conscience to the interference of his family, so in the end anything that could have happened to her is just speculation. It’s something Hymnia thinks about on occasion, but since she avoided that fate she tends not to dwell on it.

Hymnia?

10 Facts About Hymnia Montfort

  1. She was conceived during an extremely low period in Grimsley’s life where he had gotten involved with illegal gambling rings and criminals and was just barely toeing the line between his E4 job and his more dangerous hobbies, often falling into debt and in general in both a bad place mentally and in situation. During a particularly intense poker game with a criminal organization, Grimsley, with nothing left to bet, wagered his firstborn child. He lost. Hymnia was conceived to fulfill that bet (Grimsley was already kind of hooking up with Shauntal on the side so he had a mother in mind for his wagered baby, not to mention mages tend to be more valuable on the black market so he was hoping to pay off more of his debt than originally planned by giving the criminals a more valuable baby.) However, during the pregnancy, he realized that he’d made a horrible decision and sought help from his family. In the end, Champion Iris became involved and while the situation was sorted out and the offending parties apprehended, following Hymnia’s birth, Grimsley quietly retired from his E4 position and took a much needed vacation in Alola, leaving his daughter with his sister Diana.
  2. Hymnia’s parents were married when she was about three years old, and her younger brothers were born about a year later. She is generally nonchalant about her unconventional origins and gets annoyed when people question her family life based on gossip.
  3. She takes very strongly after her grandmother, Calliope, who was one of the first members of Unova’s Elite Four back when the region had first joined the Pokémon League. Her hair has a straighter texture like Shauntal’s however (aside from her ‘spikes’ that are on the side of her head).
  4. Her starter, like all members of the Montfort family, was a Deino given to her when she was very young by her father. She named her Deino Astor, which then later causes a bit of confusion when her first cousin once-removed is born a few years later and is named Aster. Hymnia doesn’t see the issue though, since the two names are spelled differently.
  5. Hymnia is very logical and extremely intelligent, skilled at problem solving and observations. However, she’s also not very good at socializing, being especially bad at holding a coherent conversation as she tends to just jump to the topics she finds most important rather than wait for the other person to try and catch up to her train of thought. Talking to her is often like listening to someone brainstorm out loud rather than having a conversation.
  6. Grimsley taught Hymnia some basic card games when she was young and now cards are one of her favorite hobbies. As a sort of … private detective/information specialist/PI type of person, she finds card games and gambling are a wonderful way to loosen tongues and make quick friends (or enemies, but that’s the thrill of games of chance after all). One of her preferred ways of gathering information from stubborn targets is by making a bet. She often wins since she’s observant enough to purposefully set the terms in her favor, even if the other person doesn’t realize this.
  7. Hymnia can be a bit of an adrenaline junkie, often taking the high-risk high-reward route rather than the safer but less promising one. She generally assumes that she’ll be able to think her way out of any trouble she gets into, but her overconfidence has landed her in sticky situations more than once. Luckily, she has her sidekick Penelope to help her out whenever things go south.
  8. Being the descendant of a more mischief-inclined sort of fae on her mother’s side, Hymnia’s magic has a strong focus on illusions and trickery, something she finds very useful in her work as it comes in handy for disguises, gathering information, and being stealthy when the need arises.
  9. She specializes in dark-type pokémon like her father. She considers dark-types to be the most ‘useful’ kind of pokémon, being both clever and sneaky (much like herself). Aside from Astor, I know she has an Absol, though the rest of her team is still under construction.
  10. One of her main rivals is Cicely, Cress’ daughter (raised by her other father) who is deeply involved with the Castelia mob. Having a teasing personality, Cicely often likes to provoke Hymnia then cover her tracks, usually infuriating the younger woman. At the same time, Hymnia loves the the thrill of the chase and finds her ‘games of cat and mouse’ with Cicely to be some of her most enjoyable cases. Penelope is just tired of all the shenanigans her friend and sort-of-boss gets up to and wishes they could go back to straightforward and more importantly safe jobs from now on, pretty please?
