Why was Giovanni and Ariana’s marriage so toxic? Was it an arranged marriage or something? Were they ever happy together?

(Update this is like 850 words long putting most of it under a cut I’m so sorry I do not know restraint.)

Long story short, it’s complicated, but basically the only time they were truly happy together was before they married, and were simply best friends. The marriage is what ruined their relationship.

Ariana was childhood friends with Giovanni and his twin brother Giorgio, thanks to their parents all being the leaders of allied crime syndicates. While there was never a formal arrangement, there was always a loose understanding that it was likely Ariana would marry one of the brothers when they were older, to solidify the ties between their families. Ariana knew this and was perfectly fine with it, since she had quite the crush on Giovanni. Giovanni in turn had no real romantic feelings for his childhood friend, while Giorgio did, but Ariana had no interest in the younger twin. When Giovanni announced that, with his mother’s blessing, he was traveling to Kanto to form a new branch of Team Rocket, Ariana asked him to marry her. He accepted, figuring it would happen to him or Giorgio either way, and even if he had no real feelings for her, they say you should marry your best friend, so it should be fine.

It was not fine.

The newlyweds found themselves quickly spiraling into endless arguments, disagreeing on small matters of how to run Team Rocket to what their relationship was – Giovanni assumed that they were just married for the sake of appearances and alliance and it’d be fine to pursue other attachments outside each other, while Ariana was furious at the idea of her new husband already planning to find other lovers so soon after marriage. She loved him, why couldn’t he see that and love her back exclusively with his whole heart? Ariana becoming pregnant about a year later didn’t help matters, as they disagreed on the topic of children as well. Ariana hoped raising their child together would finally make Giovanni fall for her, already planning ways to use the baby to win him over, while Giovanni was dreading the prospect of becoming a father, having little interest in children but knowing it was expected of him. It was during this time that he began his affair with one of his underlings, Delia, dating her in secret even after the birth of his daughter, Marcella.

Despite Ariana’s best efforts, Giovanni never bonded much with Marcella. He spent time with her and did his part to take care of her, but she could tell his heart wasn’t truly in it. When Delia announced her resignation from the team unexpectedly and Giovanni grew upset and moody afterwards, Ariana grew suspicious and after a little digging, was able to uncover evidence of the affair. She was furious at her husband, but not particularly surprised, so decided to get revenge. She knew that Giorgio had held a torch for her for ages, so it wasn’t too difficult for her to seduce him, giving Giovanni a taste of his own medicine (and Giorgio a surprise son to raise on his own once she was done with him). It worked, Giovanni baffled why his own twin brother would go behind his back with his wife. Even if he wasn’t in love with Ariana, it still rubbed him the wrong way, and he’s never been able to quite look at his red-eyed nephew without a trace of annoyance.

After this incidence, the two realized things were quickly heading into irreparable territory, and if they wanted to be able to run Team Rocket together, let alone raise Marcella, they needed to come to some kind of agreement. For the next couple years, they had a tenuous peace, both making concessions for the other and trying to focus on productivity over arguing. This lasted, not without plenty of smaller fights, until around when they were expecting their second child. While Giovanni still hadn’t really warmed up to the concept of fatherhood, he had grown more comfortable spending time with a now 4 year old Marcella, and both he and Ariana were hoping a second child would help continue to smooth things over. Spoiler alert it didn’t.

When Silvio was born, Giovanni felt instantly attached to him in a way he hadn’t with his daughter. Perhaps it was due to being in a better mindset about parenting, or just something unknowable, but his fondness for his son was obvious. Ariana was delighted seeing her husband showing more interest in parenting since this could be the first step to him showing more interest in her too, but this instead seemed to come at the cost of their relationship. A second child added more stress to the already on-a-thread peace they had and more arguments and petty fights broke out than ever. Before long, they could barely be in the same room and things never really recovered from that point.

The two never formally divorce, but they essentially are and while Ariana still holds feelings for her husband, they’re mostly overshadowed by bitterness. Giovanni continued to ignore his crumbling marriage with a string of affairs, and their children grew up fully aware of their parents’ broken relationship, both leaving home and mostly cutting contact as soon as they were old enough to. And that’s the current state of things when the events of the game plots kick off!

Lore Masterpost

I realized that I’ve never made a post just outlining how I use Legendary Pokemon in this AU and the details and lore behind so I’ll take the opportunity to do that now. I’ll most likely add this to my Legendaries and lore pages on here as well so it won’t be buried in just this post!

Legendary Pokemon: Legendary Pokemon are supernatural, mythical beings that exist as their own category. Their origins are mysterious, but they all seem to draw from the same type of power and share some commonalities.

  • They all were created by an external force and were originally not Legendary Pokemon. This has been proven via the historical record of people becoming certain Legendaries, as most Legendaries were formed from famous historical figures (such as the Founder King of Unova). Other Legendaries are too old to know their origins or it was simply never recorded, but it’s assumed their origin is the same. Most were humans, but in theory a supernatural could become a Legendary as well. The most recently created Legendaries were the Lunar Duo, created about 200 years ago, and the Beast Trio, created about 150 years ago. The oldest known, and assumed first, Legendaries are the Creation Quartet, who have existed for all of recorded history.
  • They can be created by either an unknown force or another legendary. Arceus, Giratina, Dialga, Palkia, Xerneas, and Yveltal all have unknown origins and are thus known as Prime Legendaries. In turn, Arceus, Giratina, Xerneas, and Yveltal have the power to create new legendaries themselves, and all others (barring Dialga and Palkia) were made by one of these four. It was presumed Prime Legendaries had prior forms as well, but this wasn’t proven until the acts of Team Oracle reverted all Legendaries – including Primes – to their original forms.
  • Due to their origins, all Legendary Pokemon are unique. There is only one of each and they’re immortal. However, many have the ability to traverse vast distances very quickly, thus sightings of the same Legendary on opposites ends of the world within a short period of time have led to some believing there are multiples of them.

I classify Legendaries somewhat differently than in canon, so some pokemon that are legendary in canon I don’t count as such in my AU and some that are mythical in canon I class as legendary. The full list along with their original names in their original forms can be found on the Legendaries page and Directory.

Mythical Pokemon: Any Pokemon that’s not a Legendary, but is significant for being especially rare, important, or having unusual abilities. This includes all canon mythicals not on my list, along with any legendaries that didn’t make my list (such as the Weather Trio and Alola Legendaries). Some Mythical Pokemon are unique like Legendaries (such as Hoenn’s Weather Trio and the Tapus of Alola), but due to having different origins, are not classed as Legendaries. The one exception to this is Rayquaza who, 1000 years ago, merged with a human Lorekeeper in order to Mega Evolve for the first time thanks to intervention from a Prime Legendary, making it the only hybrid Mythical/Legendary known to exist.

Mew: Pokemon are believed to be aliens that arrived to Earth 10s of millions of years ago, and Mew is believed to the original form of the entire species. Over time, Pokemon adapted and evolved to their new environment (driving out other species of prehistoric animal in the process), leading to the vast number of different types today. However, Mew is their common ancestor and whether or not this ‘living fossil’ could have survived to modern times in some form is a subject of heated debate, some believing it to be likely and citing supposed sightings while others see Mew as being firmly in cryptid territory.

Deities: While almost all Legendaries and many Mythical Pokemon are worshiped in some form as deities, there also exist ‘non-Pokemon’ deities in this world, similar to the wide variety found in real life religions. Many people don’t necessarily make a distinction between the two, however, and worship both Legendary/Mythical Pokemon and local deities in the same manner. Generally, most people around the world observe some form of polytheistic religious practice, though some are much more spiritual than others.

Supernatural Beings: Alongside humans and Pokemon, a vast variety of supernatural beings exist. In modern times, most live in parallel/pocket worlds due to increasing conflicts with human populations, but generally everyone has had some kind of supernatural encounter in their life – be it ghosts, meeting someone not human, or any other kind of incident. Unlike humans, most supernaturals do not train or have a significant relationship with Pokemon, but there are many Pokemon who evolved to mimic or resemble supernatural beings (like Froslass or most dragon types). Despite living separately now, many humans still have some supernatural ancestry and there are still cases where humans and supernaturals become close in modern times.

Another worldbuilding change/update. As I’ve developed how magic works in this AU I’ve realized that the concept of dragonbloods (humans descended from dragons with some draconic traits) are kind of redundant when compared with other people who have some supernatural ancestry. So, I’ve (sort of) removed the concept. At least as a separate distinction from other humans with magic powers/supernatural heritage. Small unusual traits like pointed ears, slight fangs, etc are common enough in those with supernatural lineage from a variety of sources, not just dragons, so having to categorize those who happened to have a dragon ancestor started to feel limiting to me. I’ll still note what kind of supernatural ancestry a character might have (dragon or otherwise) on profiles, but the category has been removed from filters on the profile pages and from individual profiles.

Can you explain who all your OCs are (Agnar, Dmitry, etc.)? I’m curious.

Of the characters listed in the “OC Adults & Historical Characters” section on my directory, everyone starting from Sir Aaron is a historical character, with most of them being the past lives of certain fankids or adults who are reincarnations. Seamus is an original Team Plasma member and Cress’s ex-boyfriend, you can just picture him looking like the generic grunt with orange hair and blue eyes.

Agnar, Dimitriy, and Jeremiah are all OCs that are related! The three of them are brothers, despite the different surnames, and are all the same kind of immortal being. In fact, they’re actually the younger brothers of Solomon (who currently is the adopted son and youngest child of Cynthia & Diantha). Their kind used to serve the deities that Arceus and Giratina were created from (that is, Ellam and Jeshir) and these four, in particular, are all the direct creations of Jeshir, making them basically his sons (and Tanith’s older siblings!)

Due to events that took place thousands of years ago when Jeshir became Giratina, they and a number of their kin lost a lot of their powers and ended up stuck in the mortal plane, though they retained their immortality. Basically, the way it works is that their bodies can be killed, but if that happens they’ll simply regenerate in the form of a child (like a phoenix), weakened, and will regain their powers as they grow, eventually ceasing to age once they’re fully grown and living on until they end up with another fatal injury and regenerate again, over and over.

Over time, the brothers all went their separate ways and all have lived many different lives over the course of history, so these are just their current identities! Agnar lives in poké!Scandinavia in a remote cabin as an outdoorsman, Dimitriy travels the world as a hitchhiker and sightseer, and Jeremiah is currently a wealthy Kalosian playboy just living it up. Solomon was a scholar until he ended up regenerating in Sinnoh after an unexpected accident (or was it an accident…) and was mistaken as an abandoned child by some hikers who found him by chance, which eventually led to his adoption by Cynthia and Diantha. He’s aware of Jeshir though and his original father being in Sinnoh is the main reason he sticks with his new family. His brothers are also aware of how their father and uncle have reverted to their original forms, as well as how they now have a new baby sister, and the three of them will play a role in Tanith, Solomon & Balthazar’s story as well as the main plot.

There’s more to this backstory, involving a fifth brother who they don’t talk about and more lore about their kind but this is getting long enough as it is so I’ll save it for a later post!

Why do so many People have Russian last names in your AU? I think it´s really cool

Thank you!

Most of the characters with Russian-origin surnames in this AU are from Sinnoh! Unlike Hokkaido (the part of Japan that Sinnoh is based on) in real life, Sinnoh in this AU has a large population of people with poké!Russian ancestry as well as poké!Japanese, with many people being some mix of both. As a result, someone from Sinnoh is just as likely to have a Russian-language surname as they are a Japanese one, hence why you’ll see some of each in the section for Sinnoh families on the blog.

Got me curious, who is the main antagonist in your verse?

The main antagonist of the L&L story is a mysterious new evil team called Team Oracle! They’ve got a culty vibe and their goals are shrouded in mystery, though they seem to be interested in the powers of Legendary Pokémon. Are they the ones responsible for so many Legendaries reverting to their original, human forms? But if that’s the case then how? And are they related to the disappearances of some of these former Legendaries and those related to them?

The main story of this verse centers around the fankids (mostly the main seven – Emery, Gavin, Renato, Tipha, Ulyssa, Roy & Draco) uncovering the truth of all those questions and more – discovering what Team Oracle are planning and who they really work for.

More will be revealed about them as I continue to work on profiles and (hopefully) eventually stuff like fanfic for the AU!

List of Dragonbloods

Since why not? I figure it might be useful to say who’s descended from a dragon since not all of them are from clans. (Just in case anyone doesn’t know – dragonbloods are a species of human who have dragon ancestry. They’re typically nobles and aristocrats and possess some draconic features and the ability to communicate with dragon pokemon, similar to Iris’ ability in the anime.) Note that this list will only include canon characters, not OCs/gijinkas/fankids/etc.

Kanto
Yellow Tokiwa – Daughter of a dragon god, so she’s technically a demigod. Her grandchildren will be regular dragonbloods though.

Johto
Clair Mikami – Clan head of Fusube-Mikami joint clans prior to being succeeded by Draco.
Crystal Mikami – Clair’s little sister in this AU. Member of Mikami clan.
Lance Fusube – Dual dragonblood, as the son of a dragon god and member of the Fusube clan. Technically a demigod, but his grandchildren will be regular dragonbloods.
Liza Fafnir – Member of the Fafnir clan, who are from a Scandinavian region but have strong ties in Kalos as well.

Hoenn
Lisia Lu – Member and heir of the Lu clan.
Wallace Lu – Member of Lu clan main family.
Winona Lu – Member of the Lu clan branch family.
Drake Lu – Former Lu clan head.
Zinnia Surgawi – Member of Draconid clan main family.

Sinnoh
Cynthia Drakonova – Head of Drakonov family.
Aaron Nikoyalev – No clan. Descendant of unknown Rotan dragon through his estranged father, Ghetsis.

Unova (It’s not called The Land of Dragons for nothing!)
Hilda Montfort
 – Member and heir of Montfort family, descendant of House Harmonia.
Hilbert Montfort – Member of Montfort family, descendant of House Harmonia.
Nate Montfort –

Member of Montfort family, descendant of House Harmonia.

Rosa Montfort –

Member of Montfort family, descendant of House Harmonia.

Grimsley Montfort –

Member of Montfort family, descendant of House Harmonia.

Drayden Pendragon – Unova branch family head of House Pendragon.
Iris Pendragon – Member of main branch family of House Pendragon. Descendant of Ajagara clan.
Shannon Pendragon – Member of branch family of House Pendragon.
Benga Redwood – No clan. Descendant of unknown Galaran dragon through his father.
Ghetsis Gropius – No clan. Descendant of unknown Rotan dragon.
N [Gropius] Montfort – No clan prior to marriage into Montfort family. Descendant of unknown Rotan dragon through Ghetsis.
Curtis [West] Montfort – No clan prior to marriage into Montfort family. Descendant of unknown Rotan dragon through Ghetsis.

Kalos
Calem Sycamore – No clan. Descendant of Fafnir clan through his estranged father.
Alain Sycamore – No clan. Descendant of Fafnir clan through his estranged father.
Drasna Fafnir – Member of Fafnir clan.
Titus Fafnir – Member of Fafnir.
Sawyer Sheng – No clan. Descendant of Draconid clan through his father (a former clan member).

Alola
None. This region used to be ruled by a dragonblood clan but they were killed in a coup centuries ago. The only ‘survivor’ is Ohia, who is a Faller from a world where this royal family were never killed off. There’s also Ryuki… but he’s an actual dragon and not a dragonblood so he doesn’t count.

who would be the next gen league members in this verse? (like fankiddos wise)

[This content is out of date and no longer canon (Various ships/character goals have changed)]

Right. So I have fankids who are currently league members during the Plot and ones who will become league members in the future. I’ll list them all out and note which category they fall into as well as their specialty.

World Page

I’ve finally made updates to the world page. Sorry for the wait! The coding is a bit sketchy, but all the important info should be there nonetheless. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! The worldbuilding is one of my favorite things to talk about.

How can same sex couples have biological children?

I think I made a post about this a while back but I’ll say it again since it’s been a while. Short answer – it’s a fantasy AU so I just kind of figured I could do what I want. Long answer – it’s a fantasy AU and humans evolved differently because something something magic. Basically, pretty much anybody can get pregnant or impregnate others regardless of gender. The details of how this works depends on what kind of level of ‘unconventional biology’ you are comfortable with, but I find the whole process a little bit squicky myself so you probably won’t be seeing any in depth pregnancy headcanons on here. Since reproduction is basically an ‘anything goes’ kind of deal, most people in this AU are bi since I feel like that would make the most sense. Gender roles (fashion, parenting, occupations, etc) also tend to be very flexible, even historically. There’s probably more I can go in depth with, but that’s the basics of it.

The actual answer is because I like designing fankids who have traits from both parents and wanted to be able to do that even for same sex couples, so I made up an explanation that fit into my already established worldbuilding for this AU.
