Mythology Monday Round One

So, let’s try this out! Today’s the day I talk about mythology. Feel free to send asks about this stuff as well – it’s the day to do so.

I guess I’ll start out this section with a general overview of sorts – sort of a sampler of what we’re working with here. As it says in the blog’s description, this is a ‘fantasy fusion AU’, which is a fancy term for ‘I am really just doing what I want and am also a huge mythology nerd.’ This world is the pokémon world, or a pokémon world, somewhere in between the games and the anime if they got thrown in the blender with a high fantasy novel and fast-forwarded to the modern era/near future. Magic exists and is documented and scientifically studied to a certain extent. Gods are real. Supernatural beings walk among humans – some well known and others hidden. Sometimes weird things happen and the only explanation is ‘probably some sort of magical anomaly’. In Kanto and Johto (collectively known as Honshu) people leave daily offerings at the shrines to their city’s deity, usually located at the local Gym, and don’t bat an eye when the gifts mysteriously vanish. Everyone at least knows someone who has met the local god – an aunt from Cerulean who was saved from drowning by a fisherwoman she swore could breath underwater; a cousin from Lavender who was gently led out of the Pokémon Tower after getting lost by an ethereal but kindly woman who seemed simultaneously young and old; a friend who went missing in the Viridian Forest for three weeks, only to come out perfectly healthy and having vague memories of a man in white or a woman in yellow. In Kalos, everyone simply knows to leave a bit of cream out at night for the Neighbors and to not follow strange music or lights in the forest. ‘If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you – most of the time.’ Sometimes you’ll wake to find a ring of Morelull and Shiinotic in your backyard or spy a group of Clefairy dancing around a standing stone under the full moon. Pokémon are generally safe, even those touched by they fey – it’s the figure dancing in the mushroom ring and perched at the top of the carved stone spire you need to be worried about.

This is a fantasy world, a blending of pokémon and urban fantasy, where traditions are sacred and superstition is more than a way to put oneself at ease. Remember to tread carefully, and listen to your pokémon when they seem agitated, they can often see more than you can.

The world page has been added! It can be accessed from the main page, or by this link. Hopefully this will explain a bit about this AU, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask me!
